Welcome and Introduction
Teaching elementary students is a joyful, inspiring calling that blends skill, intellect, social justice, and a positive spirit! At California State University, Long Beach, our Multiple Subject Credential Program helps future educators shine in all these ways! Rooted in equity-driven, culturally responsive teaching, our program is guided by passionate faculty and teacher-scholars devoted to educational justice. We nurture visionary elementary educators (TK–8) who are reflective, caring, and well-prepared—teachers who spark curiosity, celebrate students’ rich languages and cultures, and build lively, inclusive classrooms where every child feels seen, heard, and ready to flourish. Schools across public, private, and charter sectors love hiring CSULB-prepared teachers because of their excellent training and deep commitment to equity. Through engaging coursework and meaningful hands-on experience, our candidates grow into confident professionals ready to support diverse learners—especially those from Long Beach and nearby communities—and successfully complete all state requirements with purpose and pride.
Two Way to Enroll
Post-Baccalaureate
Students who have already earned a bachelor’s degree may pursue a career as an elementary teacher through the Post-Baccalaureate Program (Post-Bacc), which is especially well suited for graduates of Liberal Studies, graduates from other majors, and individuals seeking teaching as a second career.
Undergraduate - MSCP Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP)
Undergraduate students who are certain they want to pursue a career in teaching have the opportunity to earn both their Bachelor’s degree and a teaching credential simultaneously through the Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP).
Your Journey, Your Pathway
Our program is designed with flexibility in mind, offering different pathway options to match your goals and interests. At CSULB, both the Post-Baccalaureate (Post-Bacc) and ITEP (Integrated Teacher Education Program) options within the Multiple Subject Credential Program (MSCP) include opportunities to pursue either a BILA add-on pathway (Bilingual Authorization) or the UTEACH (Urban Teaching Academy) pathway. Curious to learn more? Click on each accordion below to explore these pathways and discover which option feels like the best fit for you!
The MSCP Bilingual Authorization (BILA) pathway is available for both post-bacc and ITEP candidates and allows candidates to earn the Bilingual Authorization to teach in dual-language classrooms. It’s designed for teachers who want to use the target language for instruction (including explanations and preview-review routines) and to engage and communicate with students and families in that language.
CSULB offers Bilingual Authorizations in the following languages:
- Korean
- Mandarin
- Spanish
- Vietnamese
The UTEACH (Urban Teaching Academy) pathway is a unique opportunity for students to combine pedagogy and practice in a personalized credential program designed to fully prepare future teachers in a hands-on supportive school setting. Program features include the following:
- UTEACH is a yearlong student teaching residency-like program held at Long Beach Unified School District elementary school sites.
- UTEACH offers personalized attention from University faculty and school based personnel.
- UTEACH course work is linked to real teaching in a real classroom, and your space is reserved in every course.
- UTEACH methods courses are held off-campus. No campus parking problems.
- Fall Semester Schedule: Student teach 3 half-days a week, plus 1 full day, and afternoon coursework. Friday is a working day, so you can earn money as a substitute, even as an ITEP student!
- Spring Semester Schedule: Student teach 4 full days and afternoon coursework. Friday is a working day, so you can earn money as a substitute, even as an ITEP student!
- UTEACH empowers future educators—especially educators of color—to create inclusive, humanizing classrooms where all students thrive. We center Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Pedagogies and Anti-Racist practices to support all learners.
For more information on the UTEACH pathway, contact the UTEACH Coordinator, Dr. Rita Suh, at rita.suh@csulb.edu or attend one of our information sessions.
The Multiple Subject Credential Internship pathway is available for post bacc candidates only. Internship are for candidates that have an offer of full-time employment by the district as the full-time teacher of record in a multiple subjects classroom.

Got Questions?
The Student Success and Advising Center (SSAC) at CSULB provides advising to all prospective and current credential students. See the advising schedule list below for more information on how to speak with an advisor. We also offer monthly information sessions where an advisor goes over the program in detail and answers any questions that prospective students have. We suggest that prospective students begin by attending an information session first and then reach out to SSAC with any questions or one on one assistance you may need after that.
