Career Technical Education Teaching Credential

Preliminary CTE Teaching Credential

The Preliminary CTE Teaching Credential integrates core academic knowledge with technical and occupational knowledge. This credential is valid for three years and authorizes the holder to teach in the subject, also known as industry sector, listed on the credential in grades twelve and below and in classes organized primarily for adults, in career technical, trade or vocational courses. CTE Credential holders have increased job opportunities, help students connect college preparation with post-secondary career readiness, work with career pathways via Linked Learning and connect schooling to the industry sectors.

CSULB's pathway to obtaining the Preliminary CTE Credential is for teachers with prior industry experience, and who hold a Valid California Education Specialist, Multiple Subject or Single Subject Teaching Credential with an English Learner Authorization.

To apply for the Preliminary CTE Teaching Credential, please follow these steps:

  1. Please read Preliminary CTE Teaching Credential Evaluation Request (PDF) information sheet
  2. Pay $25 Credential Evaluation and Services fee (Link)
  3. Gather required documents (see appropriate Step 1 information sheet). Please make sure to title each document clearly with your name, campus ID, and description (e.g LastName, FirstName_CampusID_Payment Receipt).
  4. Complete the Preliminary Career Technical Education Teaching Credential (Link) form

What happens next? After receiving your packet, a Credential Analyst will email you a credential evaluation. If it is determined that you qualify for the Preliminary CTE Teaching Credential, you will be directed by the Credential Analyst to submit a Request for Recommendation. Once we receive your Request for Recommendation, a Credential Analyst will submit an online recommendation to the CTC and you will then receive an email from the CTC (donotreply @ ctc.ca.gov) directing you to go online to complete the application (Professional Fitness Questions) and pay for your document. You will also receive an email from a Credential Analyst with information for enrolling in CTED 403A-Foundations of Career Technical Education, which must be taken within one year of issuance of your Preliminary CTE Teaching Credential.
