Important Information about Modes of Instruction

Starting in Fall 2021, many classes will return to face-to-face or hybrid modes of instruction. Check the COVID-19 Info page regularly for updated information about health and safety guidelines at CSULB. If a class is in an alternate mode of instruction, instructors will communicate any tools or resources students will need to access their class lectures, notes, and exams online. This information could be on BeachBoard, Zoom, and other technologies. Pay careful attention to a potential change in each class's schedule, location, and class notes based on an update in health and safety guidelines. Each class will have one of the following formats:

  • Synchronous online: all classes will be remote at scheduled days and times
  • Asynchronous online: no scheduled day and time, so students can complete work at different times throughout the week
  • Mixed online: all classes will be remote, with some meetings at scheduled days and times and some asynchronous work
  • Hyflex: class split between students enrolled in face-to-face instruction and students enrolled in synchronous online instruction, meeting at scheduled days and times
  • Hybrid with synchronous online: some face-to-face instruction and some synchronous (scheduled days and times) online class meeting
  • Hybrid with asynchronous online: some face-to-face instruction and some asynchronous (no scheduled meeting times) online components
  • Face-to-face on-campus: in-person class meetings at scheduled days and times on campus
  • Face-to-face off-campus: in-person class meetings at scheduled days and times at a community site

Hybrid and face-to-face classes require students to be on campus or community site. If that will not be possible for you, please consult with your academic advisor regarding your class schedule. For more information, see Alternative Mode of Instruction.
