Admission Requirements

University Requirements

To qualify for admission to a master’s program, you must meet the General University Admission Requirements for graduate standing as well as the professional, personal, scholastic, and other standards as prescribed by the program.

Program Requirements

To apply, prior to the first semester of graduate enrollment, applicants must have either:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a major in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD), Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences; or
  2. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a discipline other than Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD). The applicant must have at least 30 semester units (or 45 quarter units) of coursework in speech-language pathology/communication sciences and disorders before enrollment in the graduate program.

Note: Students who do not meet the above requirement are not eligible to apply and will not be accepted.

Department Requirements

  • Applicants are required to submit all the required program materials to CAL STATE APPLY. (Note: We do not use CSDCAS system.)
  • Department application components include 
    • CV/Resume
    • Department Application Form (Filedepartment_application_form_csulb_slp.docx)
    • Statement of Purpose (writing prompts are available on Cal State Apply)
    • Three Letters of Recommendation 
    • Unofficial Transcript(s)

Selection Criteria

CSULB Admissions Committee will evaluate all application materials submitted by the applicants, including the following items.

  • Grade point average (GPA) in speech-language pathology coursework
  • Overall GPA
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Statement of purpose
  • Resume
  • Interview Results: Only qualified applicants receive invitations to be interviewed with members of the Admissions Committee. If an interview is offered, the interview results will be included. 

Note: GRE is NOT required for Fall 2022 admissions. Applicants do NOT need to submit unofficial or official GRE scores.

Acceptance to CSULB’s SLP graduate programs is highly competitive. The average GPA for admission ranges from 3.5 – 4.0 (for both cumulative and SLP specific coursework).

The interview evaluates the applicant's abilities and skills necessary to satisfy the knowledge and clinical standards established by the ASHA and faculty and the personal characteristics that are necessary to become a competent speech-language pathologist. The Admissions Committee selects applicants for matriculation who have demonstrated the personal qualities of maturity, integrity, and who are best suited for meeting the educational goals of the CSULB SLP MA program.

Information Session

Due to the large volume of applications per year, the department is not able to offer individual advising to program applicants. Instead,  a group information session will be offered once a semester for prospective students.

What do I need to be eligible to apply to the graduate program?

In order to apply, prior to the first semester of graduate enrollment, applicants must have either: 

  1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a major in communication sciences and disorders (CSD), speech-language pathology, speech, language and hearing sciences, etc., or 
  2. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a discipline other than Speech-Language Pathology. The applicant must have at least 30 semester units (or 45 quarter units) of coursework in speech-language pathology/communication sciences and disorders before enrollment in the graduate program.

I have a bachelor’s degree in another major (e.g., psychology, linguistics, etc.), so I do not have the prerequisite courses. How can I become eligible to apply?

You could consider completing the required academic leveling (prerequisites) courses through a post-baccalaureate program in speech-language pathology. We no longer offer such a post-baccalaureate program here at the CSULB. We cannot recommend a specific program for you. 

Does CSULB have a post-baccalaureate program in speech-language pathology?

No, CSULB’s SLP post-baccalaureate program has been discontinued.

I am currently enrolled in an undergraduate/post-baccalaureate program for speech-language pathology. I would like to apply for the graduate program during this application cycle, but I have not yet completed my coursework. Am I still eligible to apply?

As long as you have completed 30-semester units (or 45 quarter units) in speech-language pathology by the time you will have enrolled in the graduate program in the fall, you are eligible to apply.

Can I take prerequisites for speech-language pathology at CSULB through open university?

Our department’s undergraduate courses are only open to matriculated and major students. Non-matriculated students cannot take these courses, not even through open university.

When is the application deadline for the CSULB SLP M.A. program?

The Department of Speech-Language Pathology admits students to the M.A. program once per year for fall start dates. The deadline is usually January 15, but please refer to the Department’s website for the most recent admission information.

Do I have to submit the transcripts from all institutions attended?

Yes. Applicants must submit one set of official transcripts from each college or university attended, including leveling/post-baccalaureate programs (if applicable). Only one set of official transcripts is required, and they must be submitted to Enrollment Services. Official transcripts may be submitted electronically directly from a U.S. college or university to Please visit Submit Transcripts for more information. 

Submitting official transcripts is required for ALL students. If you are still in the progress of receiving your degree, you will have to submit a transcript showing you are on track of receiving your degree and ANOTHER ONE once the degree has been awarded and posted on your transcripts. The updated transcript official transcripts should be submitted electronically directly from a U.S. college or university to The updated transcripts must be submitted in a timely manner to avoid any delay in your application process. Please DO NOT send your transcripts to the CSULB SLP Department. The Department will not process your transcripts. 

CSULB students: If you receive your BA / BS from CSULB, you do not need to submit your CSULB transcripts. However, if you have taken courses at other colleges/universities, you will need to submit those official transcripts. 

Does CSULB offer course equivalency evaluation or individual consultation for prospective students?

Applicants are required to demonstrate the completion of 30 semester units (or 45 quarter units) of the prerequisite coursework in speech-language pathology before the graduate program starts if admitted. Due to a large number of applicants, our department cannot offer course equivalency evaluations or individualized consultations to prospective students. You are encouraged to visit our department website for the eligibility requirement and other relevant information about graduate program applications. 

The CSULB SLP M.A. program only evaluates ASHA prerequisites (i.e., biological sciences, physical sciences, social/behavioral sciences, and statistics) once the student is admitted into our M.A. program. CSULB SLP M.A. program has the authority to accept or reject previously-completed coursework. For more information, please visit the ASHA website.

How do I know the 30 units of CSD/CDS courses I took met the prerequisite requirements for CSULB SLP M.A. program?

Most academic post-bac programs offer core/essential/leveling courses to fill your knowledge gaps such as anatomy and physiology, phonetics, language acquisition, introduction to speech sound disorders, child/adult language disorders, introduction to audiology, and courses that help you understand normal and abnormal speech and language development across the lifespan. Due to a large number of applicants, our department cannot offer course equivalency evaluations or individual consultations to prospective students. The 30 semester units of SLP/CSD courses must not include ASHA basic science courses/prerequisite courses (i.e., biology, statistics, social sciences, and chemistry/physics).

Do I need to complete ASHA basic science courses prior to applying? 

You do not need to complete all four ASHA basic science courses prior to applying. However, we strongly encourage you complete these basic science courses before you enter the program to avoid adding workload in the graduate program. How do I check my Cal State Apply application status?

Applicants are responsible for monitoring the status of an application, including any required documentation. To help you keep track of your application and all materials, click Check Status at the top of the application dashboard. You should receive messages directly from CSULB Enrollment Services during the following phases: Application Received, Documents needed, Forwarded to department for consideration or Denial for not meeting CSU requirements, Whether or not admitted/denied if referred to the department.

How many units do I have to complete for the CSULB SLP M.A. program?

The CSULB SLP M.A. program requires a total of 50 units of coursework. It takes 5 semesters, including one full semester school-based internship and one full semester clinical internship (hospital or private practice) to complete the program. The CSULB SLP M.A. program is cohort-based. All students take the courses in the same sequence, and all courses are offered once a year. Our M.A program is a state-supported program in which courses are offered in only fall and spring semesters.  

What courses does the CSULB SLP M.A. program offer?

The CSULB SLP M.A. program offers seminars on a wide range of topics that cover developmental speech/language disorders and neurogenic speech/language disorders. A full list of courses we offer can be found in CSULB Catalog. Students also have to successfully complete two on-campus clinics before they take the internship courses.
