CED Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Workshop Series -- Spring 2022

Integrating Equity-Minded Practices: Curriculum, Pedagogy, and Technology 

Purpose of the Series:
The College of Education has invited Dr. Deborah Faye Carter to offer a Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) workshop series focused on equity-minded pedagogy supporting faculty working with diverse students. This series will highlight the development and implementation of curriculum enhancements throughout an entire program and/or course design. This workshop series has been designed with the curricular innovations teams and pathways participants in mind; however, it is open to all full time CED faculty.

Dr. Deborah Faye Carter, Associate Professor, School of Educational Studies at Claremont Graduate University, will offer this series. Dr. Carter is a higher education expert in postsecondary access and equity, transition to college, college student outcomes, race in education, mentoring, equity, and diverse learning environments in STEM. She is the former co-director of the Claremont Colleges Center for Teaching and Learning. She has held faculty appointments at Indiana University and the University of Michigan. Dr. Carter’s scholarly work has been published in The Journal of Higher Education, Higher Education: A Handbook of Theory and Research, Readings on Equal Education, Research in Higher Education, and The Sociology of Education. Among her honors, Dr. Carter has won the Bobby Wright Dissertation of the Year Award in 1998 from the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), and she received the Harold Johnson Diversity Award in 2011 from the University of Michigan.

Session 1: Curriculum Design & Innovation: Planning with an Equity-Minded Focus in Overall in Program and Course Design
Description: This workshop will cover the foundations of curriculum design, with a focus on equity-minded curriculum planning and design. Specific topics may include transparent teaching, serving racially/ethnically diverse students, and designing curricula for equity from the ground up.

Session 2: Integrating DEI & Technology into Course Re-design and Enhancement
Description: This workshop will cover concepts of “Community of Inquiry” (CoI) and discuss how that model of pedagogy can fit with online, hybrid, and in person delivery of course content. Also, we will discuss how CoI is related to concepts of equity-mindedness. Finally, the workshop content will link CoI with best practices for DEI and technology integration.

Session 3: Infusing Equity-Minded Practices in the Syllabus
Description: This workshop will focus on how to integrate equity-minded practices throughout the syllabus. How can we present a syllabus that is accessible and incorporates DEI principles? What are essential course activities that help build classroom community and support students in learning how to navigate the syllabus and use it effectively throughout the semester?

Session 4: Deeper Dive in Diversifying Course Content
Description: This workshop will focus on more extensive strategies to diversify course content and curriculum with more advanced ways to build in equity-minded practices in pedagogy. Participants will examine areas to align their curriculum and instruction with effective DEI practices.
