Sofia Carias
Sofia Carias, M.S. CCC-SLP, is a full-time lecturer in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at California State University, Long Beach. She earned her master’s degree from Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ.
Sofia has been a practicing bilingual service provider for over 20 years. She is fluent in Spanish and English. She has worked with K-12 populations using a variety of service delivery models, including classroom push-in services, pull-out therapy sessions, and parent/teacher education. Sofia’s time in the public schools also included supervising interns, new graduates, and speech therapy assistants. She is passionate about culturally responsive practices in assessment and treatment of marginalized people with speech and language disorders. Communication is a human right, and she believes that accessing fair and appropriate services should be too.
Sofia is also passionate about advocacy and mentoring in our profession. She has been actively involved with the American Speech and Hearing Association and related organizations her entire career, with the goals of developing clinicians and systems that are more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and evidence based. Sofia is a past site visitor for CAA, a past president of the Hispanic Caucus, and currently services as a member of the Multicultural Issues Board. She is excited about this opportunity to be a faculty member and move the field of speech pathology forward in new ways.
