CED Spring 2021 Faculty Seminar Series Overview

Welcome to the CED Spring 2021 Faculty Seminar Series site, which provides an overview of all college-level Winter/Spring 2021 offerings, to assist faculty in taking their Alternative Modes of Instruction teaching to the next level. Be sure to scroll through the entire page to view all sessions offered. Fostering Radical Love in the (AMI) Learning Environment
Description:
In this interactive session, participants will experience and explore strategies to build community and active engagement among a diverse student population. Participants will leave this session with concrete examples of direct applications aligned with both their Spring 2021 Alternative Modes of Instruction (AMI) environments and future classes.

Adapting Syllabi and Course Activities for Alternative Modes of Instruction 
Description: We will discuss best practices for converting conventional course activities (e.g., lecture, small group discussion) into alternative instruction format via Zoom and other applications in synchronous and asynchronous contexts. For this interactive session, participants are encouraged to bring a syllabus or description of a course activity to share with others.

Engaging AMI Practices with Nearpod that Promote Student Success
Description: In an Alternative Modes of Instruction (AMI) classroom, digital tools can create opportunities for students to connect to their classmates, maximize learning and promote active participation. Nearpod is a tool that enhances collaboration, improves conversations, and fosters engaging formative assessments. Participants will learn how to use Nearpod and reflect upon effective practices for implementation within their own AMI teaching environments.

Self care

Practices to Take Care of Our Students & Ourselves 
Description: As we approach the Spring 2021 semester, it is increasingly important to be mindful of our wellbeing. In this interactive session, participants will reflect on the six areas of self-care to promote mindfulness as well as academic, social and emotional learning which is critical to our collective success. Participants will leave this session knowing how to create a wellness plan for both themselves and their students.

Active engagement

Instructional Innovation in the AMI Classroom
Description:
During this interactive session, participants will share success stories of instructional strategies using digital tools that proved to be innovative in the Alternative Modes of Instruction (AMI) environment. Participants will have the opportunity to share approaches they have already implemented, or ideas for what they hope to implement for the Spring 2021 semester.

Using Microsoft Teams for Instruction
Description:
 In this session, participants will be introduced to Microsoft Teams and how it may be used for instructional purposes. Topics to be covered will include installation and first-time setup, creating groups, inviting group members, and features useful for instructional purposes.

Establishing community

From Surviving to Thriving in the Online Space
Description:
 In this interactive session, participants will reflect on the progress of their self-care plans or activities and make strategic adjustments to thrive throughout the remainder of the semester. We’ll discuss the difference between surviving and thriving, the importance of mid-term evaluations for students and faculty, and share strategies for academic, social and emotional development. Additionally, we will feature digital tools to build community, meet active engagement goals, and enhance learning. Everyone is welcome!
