Tips for Single Subject Credential Candidates applying to the University

The Spring 2019 Application will be available August 1, 2018
(International Applicant Deadline for Spring 2019 is October 1, 2018)

Remember! This CSULB application is separate from the Single Subject Credential Program Application.
Please Note: To be admitted to a Credential Program, all candidates must have a Social Security Number or ITIN number to be able to apply for a Certificate of Clearance with the CTC and take the required examinations.

To apply to the university, go to and click the red APPLY button.


Step 1 : Create an Account and Profile

Select “Create Account” to begin your application.  Once you have created your account, you will need to “Complete Your Profile.” In the first section titled “Education” select “Graduate, including Credential and Certificate Programs” and then in the Type of degree box select, “Teaching Credential, including CalState Teach.” The other questions should be self-explanatory. Click “Save Changes” once complete and then on the next page click “Start Your Application!”

Step 2: Select Your Program

On the first page of the application you will select the program to which you are applying. In the Campus dropdown box select, CSU Long Beach. A list of the open programs will appear. Click the + box next to the credential program you wish to apply for and then select “I am Done, Review My Selections” at the top of the page. Remember that you can only apply for one program per campus. On the next page, select “Continue to My Application.”

Please keep in mind that the website is used for all 23 CSU campus applications. There are many parts of this application that do not apply to the CSULB credential programs. Below are step by step instructions that go over each of the areas and explain what you should indicate on your application. Step 3: My Application

On the next page, you will see the four areas of the application: Personal Information, Academic History, Supporting Information and Program Materials. You will need to be sure to complete all of the required information in each of these areas before it will allow you to submit the application.

Personal Information

The Release Statement, Biographical Information, Citizenship/Residency Information, Race & Ethnicity, and Other Information sections of this area are self-explanatory. Be sure to fill in everything that is required and click Save and Continue at the bottom of each section. Once the section is complete, a green check will appear.

Credentials – This part of the application has many sections that are required to be filled out but please remember that you DO NOT need to attach any of the supporting documents. You will be submitting all of the supporting documents with your program application in EDSS 300. While it is a good idea to begin working on these items, they are NOT REQUIRED with the online university application.  Be sure to fill in each box since they are not optional, but rest assured that you DO NOT need to submit any documents (CSET scores, CBEST scores, TB Test, Certificate of Clearance, Early Field Experience).  Begin this section by responding to the first question “Do you hold or have ever held a teaching credential?” Once you respond to this question, the rest of the section will appear.

Internship Interest – CSULB credential programs all have internship options however, there are many requirements that must be satisfied prior to being eligible for an internship in any of our credential programs.  Once you are admitted to a credential program, if you are interested in an internship, speak with an advisor in the Teacher Preparation Advising Center regarding the internship requirements. Information on Internship Eligibility Requirements can be found on our website at To complete the Internship Interest section of the application you must check the acknowledgement box but DO NOT complete the Intern Application and upload it.

Credential Academic Preparation – If you do not currently hold any credentials, select “Not Applicable in both boxes in this area.

Subject Matter Competency – Subject Matter Competency is required to advance to student teaching in the Single Subject Credential Program. You must satisfy Subject Matter Competency either through coursework or the CSET exam prior to applying for student teaching. Speak with your subject area advisor regarding your options for satisfying subject matter competency. To complete this area of the application you MUST check the Subject Matter Competency Acknowledgement box but DO NOT upload CSET scores or proof of registration.

CSET Test I – As stated above, Subject Matter Competency can be completed either through the CSET exam or through coursework. If you complete your subject matter competency requirement through an approved Subject Matter Preparation Program, you will not need the CSET exam however, this section of the application is required.  In the CSET Test dropdown box select your subject area and then select “No” for the additional questions. DO NOT upload CSET scores or proof of registration.

Basic Skills Requirement – The Basic Skills Requirement must be satisfied for program admission and will be submitted with your program application while enrolled in the pre-requisite courses. Click here for more information on the Basic Skills Requirement. In the Basic Skills Requirement section, select the option you plan to use for your basic skills requirement and the check the acknowledgement box. DO NOT upload your exam scores.

Tuberculosis Clearance – You will be required to submit proof of a negative TB Test with your program application, NOT the university application.  Check the acknowledgement box in this section. DO NOT upload your TB Test.

Certificate of Clearance – You will be required to submit proof of a valid Certificate of Clearance, 30 Day Sub Permit, Activity Supervisor permit, or Child Development Permit issued by the CTC with your program application.  It is NOT REQUIRED with the university application. To complete this area you must check the acknowledgement box and answer the questions. DO NOT upload any documents.

Early (Pre-Program) Field Experience – While enrolled in the pre-requisite course, EDSS 300, you will be required to complete 45 hours of fieldwork. This is where you will complete the Early (Pre-Program) Field Experience that is required by the CSU.  This does NOT need to be complete before EDSS 300.  Check the Acknowledgement box to complete this area. DO NOT complete and upload the Early (Pre-Program) Field Experience form.

Personal Narrative – As part of the program application you will be required to write a personal statement. This will be done while in EDSS 300. In the Personal Narrative box write N/A.

Select “Save and Continue” at the bottom of the section to complete it.

Academic History – You will need a copy of your transcripts to complete this section.

Colleges Attended – Enter information for each college and university you have ever attended in this section.  You will need to have official transcripts from each college and university you have attended sent to Enrollment Services. If you have previously attended CSULB you will just need to submit any transcripts for institutions you have attended since you last attended CSULB, if any.

Transcript Entry – You DO NOT need to enter any of your transcripts in this section. Select “I Am Not Adding Any College Transcripts.”

GPA Entries – Enter the total units and GPA for each of your degrees.

Standardized Tests – You DO NOT need to enter any test information. Select “I Am Not Adding Any Standardized Tests.”

Supporting Information – This section does NOT need to be completed.

Experiences – You DO NOT need to add any experiences. Select “I Am Not Adding Any Experiences.”

Documents – You DO NOT need to add any documents. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and select “I Am Not Adding Any Documents.”

Program Materials – There is nothing required in this section since you will be submitting your program application while enrolled in EDSS 300.

Step 4: Submit your Application & Pay the Fee

Once you have completed all 4 areas of the application, they will appear green when they are complete, you are ready to submit it. You will need to pay the $55 application fee before being allowed to submit the application.  Be sure to request official transcripts be sent to CSULB form all institutions you have ever attended (community colleges, universities, etc.) Your application will not be processed until they receive all of your transcripts.  Transcripts should be sent to:

Reapplying as a Post-Baccalaureate Student

Once you complete your degree (bachelors or masters) and graduate from CSULB, you must reapply to the University as a post-baccalaureate student in order to be eligible to continue to take courses to complete the credential program. Undergraduates may begin taking program courses as a junior or senior; however, it is recommended that undergraduates take only a maximum of 12 units of credential courses as an undergraduate and submit a Request for Graduate Credit in the Senior Year prior to graduating.

Students who failed to submit an Application for an Educational Leave and do not enroll in classes for at least one semester must reapply to the University to be matriculated.
