SERVE Clearance Information

Welcome to the SERVE Program, where students learn about the realities of urban classrooms and the needs of the diverse K-12 student population.

How to get cleared for the SERVE program

What district would you like to serve in?

SERVE students will need to complete each task in order to be placed and begin fieldwork. Please follow the appropriate pathway to ensure you are completing each task correctly. Please allow up to 7 weeks to complete your fieldwork registration. Once you are cleared, you will receive an email confirmation of your fieldwork site and next steps.

All Partnering School Districts (Clearance time: 2-4 weeks)*

  1. TB Test:  Must have a valid TB Test within the last 12 months
  2.  Have a Certificate of Clearance: Students will need to be Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) cleared. This requires fingerprinting at cost to the student. Please click this link on how to apply, obtain, and view your Certificate of Clearance. 
  3. Register for SERVE on the SERVE S4 Online System
    (Students will need to upload their Certificate of Clearance and TB test to complete their registration)

ABC Unified School District (Clearance time: 4-5 weeks)*

ABC Unified School District requires additional fingerprinting, if students want to exceed the 4.5 hours max/week policy. Students will also need TB test within the last 3 months. Fingerprints at ABC Unified School District is at cost to the student.

  1. TB Test:  Must have a valid TB Test within the last 3 months
  2. Have a Certificate of Clearance: Students will need to be Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) cleared. This requires fingerprinting at cost to the student. Please click this link on how to apply, obtain, and view your Certificate of Clearance. 
  3. Register for SERVE on the SERVE S4 Online System
    (Students will need to upload their Certificate of Clearance and TB test to complete their registration.)

Optional: Students considering ABC Unified School District have the opportunity to serve up to 4.5 hours max/week without paying for fingerprints. Although, students will have the option to fingerprint with the district to do more than the allotted 4.5 hours max/week policy. Students will need to pay for their own fingerprints at the district.

Long Beach Unified School District (Clearance time: 5-7 weeks)*

Long Beach Unified School District requires additional fingerprinting at the Board Building District Office in the Human Resource Services Office. Please follow this check list to ensure all items are being met. (Fingerprinting at the district is at no cost to the student)

  1. TB Test:  Must have a valid TB Test within the last 12 months
  2. Book an appointment with Long Beach Unified for fingerprinting: Please follow this link on procedures on how to fingerprint: Long Beach Unified Fingerprint Process and Procedure (Please check off SERVE on your Clinical Fieldwork Application.)
    (If you have previously fingerprinted or is currently employed by Long Beach Unified, you will need to turn in a Clinical Fieldwork Application to the Board Building District Office in the Human Resources Services Office. Mail submissions will not be accepted.)

  3. Have a Certificate of Clearance: Students will need to be Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) cleared. This requires fingerprinting at cost to the student. Please click this link on how to apply, obtain, and view your Certificate of Clearance.
  4. Register for SERVE on the SERVE S4 Online System
    (Students will need to upload their Certificate of Clearance and TB test to complete their registration)

*If I’m employed at a school district, can I use my work as my SERVE placement?

Students are able to request to use their worksite if they meet the SERVE requirements. *LBUSD employees: You are required to follow the Long Beach process above along with this procedure.

  1. TB Test:  Must have a valid TB Test within the last 12 months (unless otherwise stated by your district)
  2. Have a Certificate of Clearance: Students will need to be Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) cleared. This requires fingerprinting at cost to the student. Please click this link on how to apply, obtain, and view your Certificate of Clearance.
  3. Submit a letter written from your direct supervisor on official district letter head explaining your job duties, who you will be working with, and if this placement meets the SERVE placement conditions. There is no format. Please visit SERVE Field Placement Conditions and see if your job qualifies. 
  4. Register for SERVE on the Calstate s4 Program (app.calstates4.com/csulb)
  5. Once you obtain all 3 completed documents, please submit your CTC and TB test on the SERVE S4 Online System and the letter to Dennis Esmeralda in the Office of Clinical Practice, EED-66.

Canceling Placement

If for any reason you need to cancel a placement, please notify the SERVE Program immediately.
