Chair's Message
Welcome to the Biomedical Engineering Program at CSULB!
The Bachelor’s degree program in Biomedical Engineering at CSULB is officially ABET accredited—a globally recognized hallmark of excellence in engineering and technology education. This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to academic rigor, innovation, and student success. ABET accreditation confirms that our curriculum meets the highest standards in the field, ensuring our students graduate fully prepared to excel in both industry and graduate studies.
Our program is designed to empower future innovators, researchers, and healthcare leaders through a strong foundation in engineering and life sciences. With hands-on learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and real-world research, students are prepared to lead in a rapidly evolving biomedical landscape. We’re committed to providing a high-quality, accessible, and inclusive education where students thrive both academically and personally.
The BME faculty bring a rich blend of academic excellence and industry experience across a wide spectrum of biomedical engineering disciplines—including biomechanics, biomaterials, bioinstrumentation, biomedical signal processing, computational biomedicine, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and regulatory science. They are passionate educators and researchers who prioritize student success through mentorship, innovation, and collaboration. Many of our faculty lead cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and have earned national recognition for advancing biomedical science, engineering education, and equity in STEM.
Our BME students consistently excel in academics, research, and leadership. They have secured competitive internships and research positions at top institutions and companies, presented at national conferences, and published in peer-reviewed journals. Many have received prestigious scholarships and fellowships, including NSF-funded research awards and industry-sponsored recognitions. Their senior design projects address real-world biomedical challenges and have been showcased at regional and national competitions.
The Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) Student Chapter at CSULB plays a vital role in enriching the student experience. Through BMES, students build professional networks, participate in outreach and service activities, and develop leadership skills. The chapter fosters a strong sense of community and provides opportunities for mentorship, collaboration, and career development.
Since our founding in Fall 2017, our program has grown from 80 students to over 300 students. Our alumni are making meaningful contributions at leading companies such as Edwards Lifesciences, Abbott, Medtronic, and Applied Medical. Many have also been accepted into prestigious graduate programs at institutions including USC, UC Berkeley, Cornell, UC San Diego, and UC Irvine.
Whether you're driven by a desire to help others, inspired by the intersection of technology and medicine, or eager to make a meaningful impact, our program provides the foundation to launch your journey. Thank you for exploring Biomedical Engineering—we’re excited about what lies ahead and invite you to join a vibrant community where excellence, innovation, and impact are at the core of everything we do.
