Before joining CSULB’s Chemical Engineering Department in 2009, Dr. Sergio Mendez spent four years in the U.S. Marine Corps infantry and was deployed to 15 countries. Upon returning home, he attended Los Angeles Valley College then earned a BS in Chemical Engineering at UC Berkeley. He worked as a process engineer for 2 ½ years, making Pentium chips for Intel, then earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from University of New Mexico and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell University.
Dr. Mendez has published journal articles on polymeric materials, computer simulations, and nano-structured materials. His research interests are primarily in Green Engineering where he has made significant contributions in research, teaching, and community outreach. Outside of his professional activities, he jogs and swims, maintains a backyard garden, and enjoys reading a good book.
