Health Science-Community Health, B.S. + MPH

Students in the Beach EDGE Health Science Community Health Education program will complete the requirements for both the B.S. and MPH in Community Health. 

Double-Counting

Beach EDGE students in Health Science may double-count 12 units of MPH electives/concentration classes towards both their B.S. and MPH degrees. These 12 units must be completed in residence at CSULB.

Eligibility & Admissions 

  1. Are a matriculated undergraduate student at CSULB
  2. Completed 60 units
  3. Are in Junior standing or higher
  4. Are a HSC Community Health Education Major
  5. Met their major specific requirements
  6. Completed or have the following courses in progress HSC 400, 401, 403 at CSULB
  7. Has a CSULB HSC GPA of 3.5
  8. Has an overall CSULB GPA of 3.0
  9. Earned ‘B’ or better in 3 out of the 4 undergraduate core courses: 400, 401, 403 with at least one of those grades being an A and none of those grades being a C
    1. A student can apply based on an anticipated grade, but in that case, admissions decisions will be delayed until the semester is over, and the final grades can be verified.
  10. Complete and sign the Beach EDGE Agreement form.

  2. A Statement of Purpose: In 2-3 pages per essay, address the following: A) Describe the experiences that have shaped your interest in public health. Comment on your particular interest in Community Health Education. Describe the one academic experience that has meant the most to you in your educational career. Outline your short- and long-term professional goals. Discuss why you are interested in the graduate MPH program at CSULB, the strengths you bring with you, and the areas in which you would like to increase your expertise and personal growth.  
  3. Two recommendations from Community College or CSULB Health Science faculty, with at least one of those recommendations from the following core HSC classes: 400, 401, 403.
  4. Resume (demonstrating paid/volunteer experience in health education or a closely related health role.)
