Men of Color in the Community College: Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities
The majority of men of color (e.g., Black, Latino, Southeast Asian, Native American, and Pacific Islander) participating in postsecondary education are enrolled in community colleges. While community colleges have served as the primary pathway into postsecondary education for these students, outcome gaps between men of color and their peers persist. Thus, this address will focus on socioecological influences that shape student success outcomes for men of color in community colleges with a particular emphasis on the dynamic interactions between psychosocial, environmental, academic, and campus ethos factors that characterize men of color’s educational experiences. Recommendations for building educators’ capacities to serve men of color equitably and responsibly will also be presented.
