COB Faculty Sufficiency

Participating/Supporting Standard

Participating faculty members actively engage in activities of the College of Business that go beyond their direct teaching responsibilities. Participating faculty members are considered to be long-term faculty, whether or not their appointment is full-time or part-time. Supporting faculty members do not participate in the operational life of the school beyond the direct performance of teaching responsibilities. Their responsibilities are normally limited exclusively to teaching and appointment is ad hoc.

COB has defined seven areas of responsibilities outside of teaching:

  1. Serving on committees,
  2. Participating in governance issues,
  3. Serving as academic advisors or tutors,
  4. Advising student organizations or working with business community boards,
  5. Participating in curriculum development and/or learning assessment,
  6. Serving as coordinators of core courses, and
  7. Engaging in other significant intellectual or operational activities. 

The AACSB standard specifies that participating faculty deliver at least 75% of annual teaching at the college level (measured in student credit hours), while the same standard is at least 60% at each department, degree program, and location level.

According to AACSB standards:

"The school maintains a faculty sufficient to provide stability and ongoing quality improvement for the instructional programs offered. the deployment of faculty resources reflects the mission and programs. Students in all programs, disciplines, and locations have the opportunity to receive instruction from appropriately qualified faculty".

Participating Faculty are those faculty who participate in the life of the College beyond direct teaching involvement. Participatory Faculty must demonstrate a substantial involvement within the College of Business during each academic year.

Sample Participating Events could be but not limited to:


  1.  Advise students in academic areas
  2.  Tutor students outside of the classroom
  3.  Advise students in career development 
  4.  Assist students in obtaining internship/work-study
  5.  Advise student professional organizations
  6.  Mentor students or consult on student projects
  7.  Judge or administer student activities or competitions 
  8.  Prepare students for professional exams, such as CPA, ORACLE, Microsoft,  etc.

  1. Engage in the program and/or curriculum development
  2. Participate or teach in CCPE* continuing education or professional training programs
  3. Contribute to instruction-related technology initiatives
  4. Participate in study abroad programs or travel study programs
  5. Participate in teaching assessment activities

  1.  Obtain projects and grants from companies
  2.  Attend departmental, college-wide or school-wide research presentations
  3.  Assist in the organization of workshops/seminars/conferences

  1. Serve on school committees
  2. Attend Departmental, College or University Assembly meetings or workshops
  3.  Serve on advisory board(s) 
  4.  Serve as a  course coordinator
  5.  Work with any of department/college/University related Centers or institutes
  6.  Undergo training or participate in faculty professional development activities
  7.  Represent department, college, or University in outreach and development activities
  8.  Performing other activities assigned by Department, College or University
  9.  Help in recruiting faculty or staff
  10.  Help in mentoring faculty or staff
  11.  Provide leadership activities
