At the CSU Long Beach campus, the MSTI program is a collaborative project among the College of Education, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and our community college partners. This collaboration has allowed outreach and recruitment efforts to accelerate the campus’ success in recruiting more students into math and science credential pathways. MSTI staff has developed a range of strategies that include individualized advising, opportunities to pursue a number of different credential pathways, assistance in obtaining financial aid, and participation in a California Science Teachers Association (CSTA) affiliate chapter for credential students. CSU Long Beach draws upon the expertise of math and science faculty in the College of Science and College of Education and teacher education credential advisors in ensuring students receive quality advisement. Students are referred to these content experts in the academic disciplines for individual advisement, evaluation of transcripts, course recommendations, and for selecting the credential pathway most suitable for them. A substantial number of students who enter math and science credential programs are community college students who transfer due to the strong partnership between the College of Education and Cerritos Community College. CSULB has, for several years, had a strong Pathways project partnership with Cerritos Community College for preparing math and science teachers and preparing to extend the Pathways project to other community colleges in its service area.
