Laura Portnoi

Dr. Laura M. Portnoi is Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Professor of Advanced Studies in Education and Counseling. Prior to her current position, she served as co-coordinator of the Social and Cultural Analysis of Education (SCAE) master’s program and Assistant Chair of the Advanced Studies in Education and Counseling department. She also co-chaired the Provost's Task Force on Graduate Student Success. Prior to joining the faculty at CSULB, Dr. Portnoi worked in the field of international education exchange for eight years, including a term as Resident Director in South Africa. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, master’s degrees from Indiana University and the University of the Western Cape (South Africa), and a Ph.D. in Comparative Education from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her current research projects focus on global competition in higher education and promising practices for women in computer science education.
