Adding an Additional Credential

Adding another Single Subject Credential to an Existing Single Subject Credential

According to the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), Single Subject teachers who are seeking to add an additional subject area onto their existing Single Subject Credential will need to have met subject-matter competence by coursework or passing all parts of the subject-specific CSET exams and have a Single Subject pedagogy course (EDSS 450) in the area in which they are seeking to add.

  1. Obtain the following items :
    • Copy of your existing Single Subject Credential
    • Copy of your Subject Matter Competency, passing CSET scores or waiver letter.
    • Locate the Name and Email address for the Subject Area Coordinator in the area you wish to add on your credential.

  2. Complete the Request to Enroll in a Methods Course to Add a Credential via DocuSign indicating the name and email address for the Subject Area Coordinator in the area you wish to add on. You will also need to upload a copy of your valid existing Single Subject Credential (this can be a screenshot from the CTC website), and proof of your subject matter competency in the area you are wishing to add on.

  3. Once submitted via DocuSign, your form and documents will be sent to the Subject Area Coordinator for review and approval.

  4. If approved, your form and documents will then be sent to TPAC for processing. You will receive an email verifying approval which you can use to show the instructor that you have been given approval to add the course without being in the program.
Please note that priority is given to students that are admitted to the program and because of this, you are not able to enroll in the course until the first day of classes, if a seat is available.  If you are not a current CSULB student you will need to enroll in the course through Open University (www.cpace.csulb.edu/openuniversity).

  5. Once you have complete the course, you will then apply directly to the state for the authorization to be added to your credential (https://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/leaflets/414.pdf).
