Supervisory Leadership Institute

The Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute (SLI) is a leadership program developed by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) designed to stimulate personal growth, leadership, and ethical decision-making in California law enforcement front-line supervisors.

Graduates of SLI have the ability to earn undergraduate or graduate credits upon completion of the program through CSULB's Credit for Prior Learning (CPL).  Below are some frequently asked questions about the program:

Credit for prior learning recognizes that learning occurs through various experiences beyond traditional classroom settings.  As a result, CSULB offers CPL opportunities that make it possible to earn academic credit for knowledge and skill acquired outside of formal education. 

Notify the course coordinator of your interest in these credits when you complete the course.  Graduates of the course will meet with the Credit for Prior Learning coordinator. In this process you’ll be provided with an application for credit.  Only current SLI students are eligible for this credit. 

  • The CSULB Credit for Prior Learning coordinator meets with the student and confirms that they are an eligible graduate of the program.
  • An application is completed by the graduate and the required fees are submitted.
  • The student meets with a faculty member to complete the Prior Learning Assessment.

Applicants are eligible for one of two options:

  • Nine upper division undergraduate units in three courses (You must register for all three courses. They cannot be split.)
    • Three units in CRJU 410: Police Administration
      • Three units in CRJU 490: Special Topics in Criminal Justice in Police Leadership
      • Three units in CRJU 497: Independent Study.
    • Six upper division undergraduate units in two courses (You must register for both courses. They cannot be split.)
      • Three units in CRJU 690: Special Topics: Leadership,
      • Three units in CRJU 690: Special Topics: Advanced Leadership. 

The cost per unit is $165. 

  • The total cost for the undergraduate credit is $1,485 for the nine units.
  • The total cost for graduate credit is $990 for the six units. 

A prior learning assessment will be completed for each applicant.  During this assessment each applicant will be required to submit their written work for review by a professor from the School of Criminology, Criminal Justice, and Emergency Management.  All work will be graded based on a rubric.

  • Undergraduate students will submit their written work for each of the eight sessions, including your adaptive leadership final project (not just the executive summary).
  • Graduate students will submit the full completed Adaptive Leadership Project (not just the executive summary) as a formal essay similar to a research project or literature review. 

Past graduates are not eligible to earn these credits.  Eligibility is only available in the academic year that you attended the course.

Yes, college transcripts are available at the end of the semester term through CSULB Enrollment Services. These are CSULB units and they are fully transferable.
