Supervisory Leadership Institute

The Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute (SLI) is a leadership program developed by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) designed to stimulate personal growth, leadership, and ethical decision-making in California law enforcement front-line supervisors.

Graduates of SLI have the ability to earn college credit upon completion of the program through CSULB's Credit for Prior Learning (CPL).  They are eligible for either undergraduate or Graduate level credit.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

 

We will only accept applications for graduates of the SLI program during the current academic calendar year in which they graduated from the program.  Past years will not be accepted. 

  • You are eligible for 9 upper division undergraduate units in three courses: 3 units in CRJU 410: Police Administration, 3 units in CRJU 490: Special Topics in Criminal Justice in Police Leadership, and 3 units in CRJU 497: Independent Study. When you register for the course you must register for all three courses. You cannot split them up into 3 or 6 unit increments.
  • You are also eligible for 6 graduate units in two courses:  3 units in CRJU 690: Special Topics: Leadership, 3 units in CRJU 690: Special Topics: Advanced Leadership. When you register for the course you must register for both courses. You cannot split them up into 3 unit increments.
  • You are not eligible for both undergraduate and graduate credit.  You may only choose one. 

  • You must have completed the SLI program. Please contact the Center for Criminal Justice at (562) 985-4940 if you are interested in earning college credit.

The cost per unit is $165. This is subject to fee when a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) is required.

  • Undergraduate Credit - Each student will be required to upload their written assignments for each of the eight sessions, including your adaptive leadership final project (not just the executive summary), to BeachBoard, the campus’ e-learning environment. Before the course begins you will be given instructions on how to upload your materials to the website. Two instructors from the School of Criminology, Criminal Justice, and Emergency Management will review each assignment and grade them on a credit/no credit basis. College credits are earned based on your work performed during the course and enrollment in this cohort.
  • Graduate Credit - Students will be required to submit the full completed Adaptive Leadership Project (not just the executive summary) along with an additional research paper based on their Adaptive Leadership Project.  The course syllabus will outline the paper requirements and deadlines.  Two instructors from the School of Criminology, Criminal Justice, and Emergency Management will review the assignment and grade it on a credit/no credit basis. College credits are earned based on your work performed during the course and your Adaptive Leadership Project research paper.

  • No. You may only register for the credit during the academic school year in which you attended the POST Management Course.
