Kinesiology, B.S. (Exercise Science Option) + Exercise Science, M.S.
Students in the Beach EDGE Kinesiology B.S. (Exercise Science Option) + Exercise Science M.S. program complete the requirements for both degrees through a single, integrated pathway. Beach EDGE students may double-count up to 12 units of graduate-level (500-level and above) coursework toward both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Double-counted courses must be completed in residence at CSULB.

- Bachelor’s degree requires 120 units (campus + major requirements).
- Total discipline-specific (major) units required: 78–81 units (see current catalog).
- Key Exercise Science courses include (not exhaustive): KIN 300, KIN 301, KIN 312, KIN 332, KIN 339, KIN 405, plus approved Exercise Science electives.
- Students should follow the current CSULB catalog and advising guidance; the Roadmap below provides recommended sequencing.
- Master’s degree requires 36 units.
- Culminating activity options: Comprehensive Exam, Project, or Thesis.
- Beach EDGE students complete the full M.S. curriculum, with up to 12 units double-counted as listed below.
- Accelerated timeline note: the published pathway is an accelerated target, not a guarantee; time-to-degree depends on continuous enrollment, timely completion of required courses, and successful progress on the culminating activity.

Beach EDGE students in this program may double-count up to 12 units of graduate-level coursework toward both degrees. Double-counted courses must be completed in residence at CSULB and must meet all master’s degree standards (including maintaining a 3.0 program GPA for master’s coursework).
- KIN 530 Neuromotor Control (double-counts; replaces KIN 430 in the B.S.)
- KIN 541 Applied Biomechanics (double-counts; replaces KIN 441 in the B.S.)
- KIN 551 Advanced Exercise Physiology (double-counts; replaces 3 units of KIN/other electives in the B.S.)
- KIN 696 Research Methods (double-counts; replaces BIOL 260 / KIN 483 in the B.S.)
Eligibility & Admissions
- Are matriculated at CSULB as an undergraduate in the B.S. in Kinesiology, Exercise Science Option.
- Completed at least 60 units.
- Have a minimum CSULB GPA of 3.0.
- Are not a double major.
- Earned a ‘B’ or better in KIN 300, KIN 301, and KIN 312. (Applicants may apply with an anticipated grade; admission decisions will be delayed until final grades are posted.)
- Completed Beach EDGE Application Form.
- Unofficial transcripts from CSULB and all universities/colleges where prerequisite courses were completed.
- CV/Résumé.
- Statement of Purpose (750–1,250 words) addressing: (1) motivation for graduate study, (2) specific areas of interest in Exercise Science, (3) preferred faculty mentor and rationale, (4) personal goals/objectives, (5) intended culminating experience (comprehensive exam, project, or thesis) and general topic area.
- One letter of recommendation from a CSULB Exercise Science faculty member who can evaluate the applicant’s potential for graduate success. NOTE: You will only need to select the faculty member supporting you during the application process. They will submit your recommendation letter separately.
- Admitted students must subsequently complete and sign the Beach EDGE Agreement form prior to ARS submission.
