The Caregiving Relationship

America is a rapidly aging nation. The Baby Boom generation is reaching 65  at a pace of 10,000 people per day. For the first time in US history, there are more than 50 million seniors. This trend is expected to continue until 2029 when the youngest baby boomers will turn 65 years old. A third of those older than 65 live alone and half of all people beyond 85 are alone.

Caregiving has always been part of human culture, but the dynamics surrounding it have changed profoundly over the past 50 years. The extended family has all but vanished, replaced by the "nuclear family" unit and families spread over long distances. While most of us are just "a phone call away" from those we love, there is a vast gulf when it comes to being able to provide them with care.

Caregiving is also immensely challenging. It places a physical, emotional and financial burden on the provider which often comes around to accelerate their own aging process.

"I love you" and "I will care for you" are frequently interchangeable expressions. Yet, they come with vastly different connotations. This program will explore the complex, intimate and powerful relationship between caregiver and recipient.
