Supplementary and Subject Matter Authorizations
The following authorizations may be added to valid Multiple Subject and Single Subject Teaching Credentials.
Supplementary Authorizations may be added to a Multiple or Single Subject Credential and are based upon 20 semester units of coursework in a specific area or a combination of coursework and examination (CSET). Introductory Supplementary Authorizations authorize the holder to teach the supplementary subject matter content typically included in curriculum guidelines and textbooks for study in grades 9 and below. Specific Supplementary Authorizations may be added to a Single Subject Credential and authorize the holder to teach the specific subject in preschool through 12th grade, and classes organized primarily for adults.
Subject Matter Authorizations may be added to a Multiple or Single Subject Credential and are based upon 32 semester units of coursework, a degree major in a specific area or a combination of coursework and examination (CSET).. Introductory Subject Matter Authorizations authorize the holder to teach the subject matter content typically included in curriculum guidelines and textbooks approved for study in grades 9 and below. Specific Subject Matter Authorizations authorize the holder to teach the subject in preschool through 12th grade, and classes organized primarily for adults.
If you have received an evaluation from our office, please be aware that the final decision regarding an applicant's academic eligibility for a supplementary or subject matter authorization will be determined by CTC staff when the documentation is submitted and the application is evaluated. California Education Code, Section 44225(e) and Title 5, California Code of Regulations, Section 80499 allow a teacher to obtain an additional teaching credential without completing the full professional preparation program for that credential.
Add a Multiple Subject Credential
A Multiple Subject Teaching Credential may be added to a valid Single Subject Teaching Credential without completing an additional program. Completion of the following, will allow a Single Subject Credential holder to add a Multiple Subject Credential:
- requires a valid Single Subject Teaching Credential
- verification of subject matter competency
- successful completion of a 3-semester-unit course in subject matter pedagogy directly related to teaching in a self-contained setting
- successful completion of a course in alternative methods of developing English Language Skills
- passing score on one of the following: Foundations of Reading examination, TPA Literacy Cycle, or Reading Instruction Competency Assessment (RICA). Note: RICA examination was retired on 10/31/25.
Add a Single Subject Credential
A Single Subject Teaching Credential may be added to a valid Multiple Subject Teaching Credential without completing an additional program. Completion of the following, will allow a Multiple Subject Credential holder to add a Single Subject Credential:
- requires a valid Multiple Subject Teaching Credential
- verification of subject matter competency
- successful completion of a methods teaching course in the academic area
Additional Content Area(s)
Additional Single Subject areas may be added to a valid Single Subject Teaching Credential. Completion of the following, will allow a Single Subject Credential holder to teach the new subject area in addition to their initial subject:
- requires a valid Single Subject Teaching Credential
- verification of subject matter competency
- successful completion of a methods teaching course in the new academic area
