Transformational Models of Educator Preparation

Under the leadership of the CSU CALL, CSU campuses have expanded the development of educator preparation to equip California secondary teachers, administrators, and counselors to implement high-quality Linked Learning practices. Educator preparation programs at seven CSU campuses have embedded Linked Learning in Single Subject credential programs. Through the Communities of Practice model, five campuses initiated plans to implement approaches that lead to mastery of competencies for teachers, counselors, and/or administrators, relevant to Linked Learning pathways. In addition, several campuses have initiated the development of certification approaches that help current Single Subject credential holders to obtain a CTE credential and/or current Designated Subject credential holders to obtain a Single Subject credential to addresses the ongoing need to increase the number of CTE-credentialed teachers to work in Linked Learning settings.  

 

Professional Development for Linked Learning 

A substantial accomplishment has been the development and implementation of high-quality professional development workshops for teachers, connecting Linked Learning with the California Standards, and the Next Generation Science Standards. In addition, Counseling faculty has developed professional development sessions to increase knowledge and awareness of how school counseling program aligns with Linked Learning framework. The intent of the Linked Learning 101 workshops is to increase knowledge and awareness of teachers, and school counselors’ roles in Linked Learning schools. 

 

Model Master’s Degree Programs in Curriculum and Instruction, School Counseling, Educational Leadership: Linked Learning Specialization 

In 2016, CSU Long Beach launched a Master’s degree with a Linked Learning specialization. This degree program addresses the needs of teachers, in school districts wanting to expand Linked Learning PD, school districts seeking to establish Linked Learning pathways, and current and future teachers seeking a deeper understanding of Linked Learning. The model program includes ongoing collaborations with local educational partners working together on program design, recruitment and admissions, teaching, and program assessment and evaluation. This Master’s Degree program will augment existing Linked Learning pre-service educator preparation and serve as a model for the integration of Linked Learning into educational administrator preparation and school counseling programs.  

 

CSU CALL Linked Learning Research Agenda 

The CSU CALL supports a research agenda of important Linked Learning topics that bring together CSU faculty-led research teams to better inform, target, and disseminate that research. Faculty-led teams conduct research that examines the impact of current models that transform educator preparation in California, and equip future secondary school teachers, counselors, and administrators implement high-quality Linked Learning pathways. In addition, CSU faculty researchers will lead dissemination efforts through publications, presentations at professional meetings, and CSU electronic communication platforms.  LINK

 

Ed.D. Candidate Fellowships for Linked Learning Research 

The project continues to support Ed.D. candidates’ research in important Linked Learning topics and brings together practitioners and CSU faculty researchers to help better inform, target, and disseminate that research. Under the guidance of CSU faculty, Ed.D. Fellows engage in both independent and team action research projects. Research products will be shared at the annual statewide Linked Learning Convention, professional meetings, and CSU electronic communication platforms.  LINK

 

Problem Based Learning

PBL 101: An Introduction to Project Based Learning for the 21st Century
The CSU Collaborative for the Advancement of Linked Learning (CSU CALL) hosted a three-day PBL Institute for Secondary School teachers, CSU Teacher Educators and District Partners. This three-day institute provided participants with the training and tools to utilize Project Based Learning as an instructional approach to implement the Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and prepare students for college, career, and citizenship in the 21st century. Participants will utilize Buck Institute for Education materials to design, manage and assess standards-focused projects and the student work that is generated by them.
