2026-2027 Graduate Fellowship Awardee from the School of Social Work - Anette Alvarez
The Graduate Fellowship Award is a highly competitive award sponsored by the Office of Graduate Studies to support students who contribute to the public good in their field of study, through active engagement in program and activities. For the 2026-2027 year, MSW student, Anette Alvarez was recognized with this achievement. Anette is a recreational therapist (CTRS) and graduate social work student with a professional focus on recreation, aging, and community well-being across the lifespan. She currently serves as Director of Resident Services, Programs, and Events for a 348-unit affordable housing community supporting veterans and older adults in the west Long Beach area. She remains active in community and professional leadership through involvement with the Community Health Advisory Committee of St. Mary Medical Center, the California Parks and Recreation Society Recreational Therapy Board as Junior Southern Representative, and the CSULB Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies Community Advisory Board. Apart from non-profit and community leadership, she works as a part-time subcontractor supporting individuals with physical and cognitive impairments in group home settings. With aspirations to become an LCSW and a lecturer in the field of recreation, Anette remains passionate in advocating recreation as an essential factor in promoting quality of life amongst marginalized communities anchored in her social work practice.
