Assistant Professor Dr. Trey Jenkins Receives National Recognition for Work with Queer and Transgender Communities
Congratulations to CSULB School of Social Work Assistant Professor Dr. Trey Jenkins who was awarded a national recognition from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). As a recipient of the Two-Spirit, Queer, and Trans People of Color (2-QTPOC) Award, Dr. Jenkins was honored for his significant teaching, practice and service contributions to queer, transgender and gender-expansive communities of color.
“I am grateful to the many colleagues who nominated me and I am very proud to be at CSULB to continue this work alongside great students, colleagues, and a wonderful community,” said Dr. Jenkins on receiving the 2-QTPOC Award – a recognition received by the School of Social Work’s own Dr. Alex Washington last year.
“It is amazing to have CSULB so well represented in this area of research and commitment,” said incoming School of Social Work Director Dr. Marissa Hansen.”
Among Dr. Jenkins accomplishments include establishing the “Belonging Lab” to support collaborative scholarship and graduate student research that examines experiences of belonging, loneliness and structural isolation among Black transgender people and other marginalized groups.
Dr. Jenkins research interests include structural determinants of mental health and wellbeing among Black transgender people and other marginalized communities, with a focus on loneliness, belonging, discrimination, and structural vulnerability. He also is involved in qualitative, arts-based and community engaged research that centers on lived experience to transform social work practice, policy and mental health equity.
A few things you might not know about Dr. Jenkins is that he has a fitted hat collection of over 100 hats! He is an avid gamer, and his favorite movie genres are horror, sci-fi and action/fantasy. He is also a proud autism dad.
