James Green
James Green is a social work scholar with a license in marriage and family therapy, a license of social work, and ten years of practice experience in schools providing trauma-focused care and building queer-affirming spaces. James has a PhD in social work and MSW from the University of Chicago, and a masters of school-based family counseling from Cal State LA. James’s research focuses on care, generally, with special attention to spaces of digital care, women of color feminist and queer care praxis, and shadow or informal care infrastructures. James uses interpretivist qualitative methods and participatory action research to work with people whose epistemologies have been silenced or discounted by academia.
Dr. Green’s current research focuses on social media in social work practices and how queer social workers of color use TikTok to provide care in the form of education, advocacy, crisis navigation, and community building. This work focuses on the ethical dilemmas of providing care through social media, including how it affects clinical boundaries, the tension between providing mutual aid and using social media to market yourself, and how to distinguish between followers who are clients versus audience members. Dr. Green is hoping to extend this work to teach upcoming social workers how to navigate the integration of social media into IRL (in real life) spaces.
Outside of work, James loves making pottery and dancing to long DJ sets surrounded by queer and femme community.
