World Ocean Day Textile Mural Project
Our Fashion Merchandising and Design students spent several months designing and constructing a large-scale textile mural for World Ocean Day using 100% recycled materials.
The project brings together students, faculty, The Salvation Army, and SeaWorld through a shared focus on sustainability. Using donated clothing and recycled textiles, students transformed discarded materials into an 18 x 8-foot mural that to debut at SeaWorld San Diego on June 8 in celebration of World Ocean Day.
Throughout the process, students explored textile construction techniques, embroidery, large-scale collaboration, and sustainable design practices while balancing the realities of deadlines, teamwork, class responsibilities, and creative problem-solving.
Alongside the mural construction, students also documented their journey through a special podcast series titled Making Waves on Jacq’s Fashion Lab, capturing the challenges, discoveries, and experiences that shaped the project from concept to completion.
