Johnson Student Development Forum

The Cynthia S. Johnson Student Development Forum brings together leaders and scholars at all levels of experience to advance their understanding of the evolving issues affecting students, higher education institutions, the profession of student affairs, and a fundamental commitment to social change.

As postsecondary institutions enter an era of "evidenced-based" practice and take greater responsibility for monitoring student outcomes, they must also assess the impact of the diverse environments that help shape student learning. Assessment of what students do must be coupled with identifying areas for improvement of student learning and development. Integrating assessments of student learning outcomes related to the climate for diversity and campus practices—and responding proactively to assessment results —may be the best strategy to ensure that we support all students, especially traditionally underrepresented students, and advance their capacities for success. The DLE survey is based on research that states optimizing diversity in the learning environment can facilitate achievement of key outcomes, including improving students’ habits of mind for lifelong learning, competencies and skills for living in a diverse society, and student retention and success.

In the Cynthia S. Johnson Student Development Institute Dr. Hurtado will share the key findings from the many years the DLE has been administered at numerous universities across the country, highlighting contributors and challenges to positive campus climates and student success. The format of the Institute allows for an interactive discussion session with Dr. Hurtado, following a formal presentation. A continental breakfast during the registration and networking period and lunch will be provided. Current California State University, Long Beach students will have a private session with Dr. Hurtado following lunch.
