BFA Animation Portfolio Guidelines

Highly recommended samples

This may include either class assignments and/or work created outside of class. 

  • Figure drawings – this should include gestures (no longer than 3-minute drawings) from live observation, not from pictures
  • Character Designs - a minimum of one human character with expressions and poses that show personality. Drawings should be gestural and show construction
  • Prop Designs – a variety of designs with rotations 
  • Environment Design - minimum one environmental study including development sketches and final render 
  • Style Frames - images representing the emotion of the scene: composite of characters, props, environment with consideration of composition and lighting
  • Animation - samples of character movement studies demonstrating personality including but not limited to flour sac, walk, various acting and performances, film excerpts, etc. May also include thumbnail drawings 
  • Illustrations - that demonstrate your knowledge of color theory and/or sequential imagery i.e. color studies for film, graphic novels, or illustrative books, or various color explorations of 1~2 environments
  • Sketchbook pages - showing ideas and processes and examples of observational drawing

Additional recommendations: focus on your strengths and interests

  • More animation samples that show character performance and/or movement studies
  • Alternative animation samples may include Experimental Animation, & Computer Animation 
  • 12~16 storyboard panel compilation showing the various composition studies
  • Color keys studies
  • Color Script for the film
  • 3D modeling/lighting/texturing examples
  • Any artwork that represents the artist's personal artistic vision
