Dr. Stephen Hawking was an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author. Dr. Stephen Hawking received his a Bachelor of Arts in Physics from University College, Oxford in 1962. After, he received his doctorate in physics from Trinity Hall, Cambridge, in 1966. Dr. Hawking is best known for his discovery that black holes emit radiation which can be detected by specialized instrumentation. It was his contribution that allowed the detailed study of black holes to be possible. Dr. Hawking was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) when he was 21, in 1963. In spite of his condition, he went on to become one of the most important physicist and cosmologists of our generation.
