2025 Student Spotlights - Artist Knox - Social Work

Master of Social Work graduate Artist Knox originally never set out to become a social worker. But when he stands with his degree at the College of Health and Human Services Commencement this May, he will have a lot to be proud of, a lot to reflect on, and a lot to embark on for a bright future ahead.
“This career path was not initially a part of my plan or vision,” Artist states. “I would say that my life circumstances positioned me on this path, and my experiences equipped me to become a social worker.”
Artist spent a time in his life in incarceration at Folsom State and Soledad Prison. Artist relays how he began to receive services from compassionate social workers and public health professionals, during that time, who helped him rebuild his life.
“I witnessed how invaluable the social workers’ skill set was to the population, and how effective advocacy could be when coupled with education, experience, and compassion.”
Artist soon began to get intentional with his educational pursuits. He earned a BA in Sociology to get a firm understanding of the social condition.
“I studied to become an MSW to learn how to navigate the system in order to provide services and direct resources to underserved communities and individuals.”
Artist’s ultimate goal is to pursue a Ph.D. in Psychology. He says the most important lesson he’s learned during his time at CSULB is the importance of community, and the impact you can have on others.
“This institution has provided me a space for me to outgrow my past mistakes without fear of judgement and with an opportunity to be seen, heard, and understood. I learned that individuals with a common goal can connect to strengthen their resolve to develop into better versions of themselves.”
Artist further cites the supportive and encouraging faculty and staff which created a foundation to aid him and equip him for the next stage of his educational and professional journey.
“I was inspired by the entire School of Social Work, which represented a community of individuals who worked in unison to see the class of 2025 succeed. Dr. Nancy Meyer-Adams was an absolute pillar of support to me. Special shoutout to my professors, Dr. Burkett, Professor Justin Stallings, Dr. Plummer, Professor James Schrage, Dr. Joanna Barreras, and the immaculately dressed Dr. Alex Washington, who taught us that statistics and high fashion can co-exist.”
Furthermore, Artist adds, “I have witnessed individuals from a multitude of backgrounds and cultural influences overcome the odds and stand alongside me to earn our degrees. I am extremely grateful and humbled by our graduating class.”
