Guidance for College of Engineering incoming transfer students
Welcome to California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) and the College of Engineering (COE)! We are honored that you selected CSULB and are excited to help you achieve a smooth and successful start to your college career.
SOAR (Student Orientation Advising and Registration) Experience Overview
The SOAR Experience consists of two steps:
- Orientation, led by the SOAR Office
- Advising and Registration, led by the College of Engineering Faculty Advisors with support from the Engineering Student Success Center (ESSC).
Your Orientation and Class Registration dates are linked: when you register for SOAR Orientation Workshop (on campus), you are assigned the corresponding Class Registration date (online).
Note: Class Registration dates are major specific
College of Engineering Advising and Registration Assistance
Faculty advisors will review transfer credits posted in MyCSULB and provide Fall 2023 course recommendations. These recommendations will be provided (via your CSULB email) prior to your Advising and Registration date. The ESSC Advising team will provide brief first-semester general virtual advising and scheduling assistance on each student's dedicated advising & Registration date listed above.
Please note that major/faculty advisors have limited availability and may not be available to assist throughout the summer but will be available on the major specific Advising and Registration dates listed above. Additionally, dedicated major advising and long-term academic planning will be available during the Fall semester’s Mandatory Transfer Advising process.
If you missed your on-campus Orientation workshop, contact SOAR immediately to reschedule for the next available workshop. Call 562.985.5515 or email soar@csulb.edu.
You will register for your recommended classes on your scheduled Class Registration date. If you missed your date, contact coe-advising@csulb.edu for assistance within 5 days of your enrollment date.
The Bob Murphy Access Center (BMAC) provides support to students with disabilities through accommodations and services, including but not limited to sign language interpreters, real-time captioners, assistive technology, and alternative media.
Complete the SOAR-BMAC Disability-Related Accommodations Form to request your needed accommodations/services. If you have additional questions, please visit the BMAC website, call 562.985.5401, or email BMAC@csulb.edu.
If you are interested in changing your major, please see the instructions relevant to your situation.
Admitted to a non-COE Major and interested in declaring a COE Major
Admission to all majors in the College of Engineering is competitive as we continue to have more qualified applicants than available new student spaces. All transfer students must declare a major when submitting their admission application.
Given that transfer admission decisions are competitive and based on meeting applicable major-specific requirements, transfer students are normally not allowed to declare a COE major or even change within COE majors. In rare circumstances, petitions to change majors to COE could be considered if student meets ALL of the following conditions:
- Student qualifies by meeting all major-specific requirements in the new major.
- Student demonstrates a progressively successful academic history that, in the judgment of faculty major advisor, reflects potential success in the new major.
- The program currently has seats available to accommodate additional students.
Students interested in declaring a COE major must contact the faculty major advisor for the intended major (see Faculty Advisor Contact Information above). Such requests are considered on a case-by-case basis and the final approval is made by the COE Dean’s Office.
Admitted to a COE Major and Interested in declaring a non-COE Major
Students admitted to a COE major but are interested in declaring major in another college must inquire with the college of the intended major. Please be aware that major changes are allowed only if:
- Student qualifies by meeting all major-specific requirements in the new major.
- Student demonstrates a progressively successful academic history that reflects potential success in the new major
- The program currently has seats available to accommodate additional students.
Please be aware that requests are reviewed by the college of the potential new major, and the final decision is determined at the college-level associated with the requested new major.
Please see Undergraduate Advising Resources for contact information.
If you have previously accepted your offer of admission and have decided not to attend CSULB, please follow the Cancel Admission instructions.
