Woman of Distinction Honor for Dr. Huong Tran Nguyen

Congratulations to College of Education faculty, Dr. Huong Tran Nguyen on being honored as a Woman of Distinction in California’s 34th Senate District for her work and leadership in education! This annual award honors exceptional women leaders in education, the arts, community services, and other areas for their outstanding work during Women’s History Month.

Prior to becoming a faculty member at CSULB, Dr. Nguyen brought over 21 years of teaching and administrative responsibilities as a classroom teacher, resource teacher, English language development specialist, professional development leader, and program specialist in grades K-12 in three California urban public-school districts. In 1994, while teaching at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, she was selected by her peers as National Outstanding Teacher of the Year and National Outstanding Teacher of Foreign Languages and English as a Second Language, an event sponsored by Disney in Washington, DC. Subsequently, she was invited to serve as a senior fellow (1995-96) at the U.S. Department of Education under the leadership of U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley during President Clinton's administration. On what receiving this award means to her, Dr. Nguyen said, “I am humbled for having been bestowed this honor and grateful to be in the company of numerous exceptionally accomplished women leaders representing different communities.”

Dr. Nguyen is currently Professor in the Teacher Education Department, served as Interim Department Chair and received the CSULB 2018 Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award.
