School Psychology graduate student, Jennifer Montepeque Diaz has been awarded 1st place in Education at the 33rd Annual CSU Research Competition. Montepeque Diaz’s winning paper, “Cebolla que hace llorar, da sabor a la comida: Promoting college enrollment for Latinas with disabilities” earned her 1st place in this CSU system-wide competition which attracted over 200 undergraduate and graduate student submissions from 22 CSU campuses. She also received 1st prize earlier this spring at the 31st Annual CSULB Student Research Competition. Montepeque Diaz’s research investigates the challenges that Latinas with disabilities face in postsecondary education, specifically highlighting the resources that support Latinas with disabilities in achieving their academic goals. Her research aims to inform transition programs so that they may be able to better meet the needs of their diverse audiences.

After completing her master’s work, Montepeque Diaz plans to pursue a doctorate where she can study the connection between parent education and academic success amongst Latinx students. “I hope my current and future research can help inform my practice as a school psychologist and the practice of educators and other student support programs serving the Latinx community.”
