Noted Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) researcher, Dr. Gina Garcia (University of Pittsburgh) dedicated two days to the College of Education this fall focusing on the work of HSIs. Delivering her keynote presentation, “HSI’s in Practice” as part of CED’s annual Veffie Milstead Jones Endowed Lecture, Dr. Garcia discussed and defined the idea of “servingness” sharing how HSIs are “transforming their structures in practice”. The following day, Dr. Garcia’s workshop for CED faculty, “Developing Social Justice Curriculum in Hispanic Serving Institutions” focused on how to further place Latinx and other minoritized students at the center of curriculum and the classroom.

CSULB is classified as a Hispanic-Serving Institution which is defined under the Higher Education Act (HEA) as colleges or universities where at least 25 percent of the undergraduate, full-time enrollment is Hispanic and at least half of the institution's degree-seeking students are low-income.
