SCPD Community Scholars Program Brings the Promise to Life

On May 1, 2026, the Student Center for Professional Development (SCPD) concluded its Community Scholars (CS) Program by welcoming Long Beach Polytechnic High School students for a full-day CSULB campus visit, many stepping onto a college campus for the very first time. What they experienced went beyond classrooms and buildings, it was a glimpse of a future they could finally see themselves in. Guided by SCPD CS mentors, high school students engaged in a day in the life college experience. Throughout the CS Program, high school student mentees connected with mentors who once stood in their same shoes. Navigating feelings of uncertainty, holding onto hope, and searching for what comes next. Through honest conversations and shared stories, belief began to grow.

As Emma Tosh, SCPD CS Mentor, reflected, “The CS campus visit will forever hold a special place in my heart. After having the opportunity to build relationships with our mentees, seeing them explore and enjoy themselves on a field trip felt like such a reward! I will remember them and that day for the rest of my life.

Aligning with the mission of the Long Beach College Promise, the CS experience reflects a shared commitment to ensuring every student sees college as an achievable path. At the same time, CS mentors are transformed by the experience. As they lead, support, and encourage their students over the course of the spring semester, they strengthen their own leadership, communication, and confidence, all while giving back to the community. This year’s CS Campus Visit was made possible through a $3,000 Community Sponsorship from the Port of Long Beach. The day was more than a visit, it was an investment in potential, access, and dreams that are just beginning to take shape. By the end of the day, one message resonated deeply with every high school student, I belong here.
