Council of Department Chairs

  1. Approve agenda (10:30)
  2. Approve minutes from Sept. 29; Approved as amended.
  3. Innovation Challenge (Wade Martin: time certain 10:40)

    2. Sunstone Innovation Challenge at CSULB
      1. Annual business plan competition where student teams develop an innovative product, service, or technology and compete for $50,000 in cash and in-kind services.
        1. First place team gets $15,000 in cash; second place team gets $10,000 in cash.
        2. Rubric for competition criteria is on the website above.
        3. Students are able to bring just the idea to the competition. Over the course of the competition, the idea will be fleshed out with the help of other resources.
      2. Challenge spans Fall and Spring semester with set due dates and events on a timeline.
      3. The Apostle Incubator is a Tuesday evening event where business ideas are evaluated to help with team building and developing a viable product.
      4. Chairs please ask faculty to share this challenge with their students; get the news out to the students and encourage participation.
  4. Announcements
    1. ASM
      1. Stipends
        1. Seeking clarifications from leaders on additional employment vs. stipend classifications; Leader stipends will ideally be submitted by Friday.
        2. Department CARES money payment will be the next round.
          1. The College needs a more detailed description of what each person is doing.
      2. Virtual Phone
        1. Cancelling the desktop phone and switching to a virtual phone does not eliminate any cost.
        2. If you have a desk phone already, the virtual phone will be no charge.
        3. You will get a 562-985- number if you get a virtual phone, but you can continue to give out your desktop phone number.
        4. There will only be one voicemail box for both your desktop phone and your virtual phone.
        5. IT plans to roll this out in mid-October.

    3. Academic Senate
      1. GA/TA/ISA Hiring Policy Language Discussion:
        1. Review current language: www.csulb.edu/academic-senate (8.1)
        2. Selection process.
        3. TAs cannot teach upper division classes.
      2. Still discussing cheating, plagiarism, and academic integrity.
    4. Dean’s report
      1. Mask Distribution
        1. College will get masks to the departments in the next week or two.
          1. Departments distribute to staff and tenure-lined faculty.
          2. Tell the college if you don’t have enough.
  5. Associate Deans (12:00-12:30)

        3. Winter SOAR (change in dates)
          1. Preliminary plan: Matriculation plan (12/1), faculty advising via campaign (12/2-12/11), students start registering on 12/14, SOAR orientation (1/5-1/11).
      2. S21 Schedule
        1. ES Technical Glitches
          1. Not formally up as of yet.
          2. Some issues with current schedule that is up.
      3. Fall Curriculum Cycle
        1. Reminder of the CNSM submission deadline is Friday 10/10
        2. Online approval
        3. CNSM Curriculum Committee Zoom meeting, if necessary, on 10/21 at 3:00 pm.
      4. Student Support Coaches for S21
        1. A coach is a replacement for SIs.
        2. Fall 2020 was generally successful.
        3. Very positive feedback from BIOL 212/213 and in CHEM 11A/B.
        4. Need Spring 2021 requests from departments by 10/19 (to be discussed at CDC on 10/20).
      5. Week of RSCA / CNSM Student Research Symposium
        1. Feedback Discussion:
          1. One day or Multi-day?
          2. “Flash Talks” (pre-recorded short talks/presentations; three minutes at the most) followed by planned panel/session.
          3. Everyone should do a poster, but “flash talks” are optional but encouraged.
          4. Consider doing a short PowerPoint in addition to the poster.
          5. Poster Q&A session?
          6. Do we want a keynote speaker?
      6. Changes in Counselors’ Conference Format
        1. Online/Website
        2. Working on creating departmental assets (e.g. infographics, one sheets, etc.)
      7. CNSM Showcase: Spring 2021
        1. We are 5% above target.
    2. Research
      1. CO Grant Writing Workshops
        1. CSU Proposal Mentoring Workshops will be virtual this year.
        2. Barbara will send information to the faculty; chairs please encourage participation where necessary.
        3. November 6th, 2020
          1. Morning Session: Presentations of ideas; writing the project proposal, Q&As, and one-on-one time with mentors.
          2. Afternoon Session: Proposal rewrite focused. Same format as the morning.
  6. Other Business
    1. Update on Face-to-Face Teaching
      1. The Dean has asked the Provost and is waiting for guidance.
      2. Plan for return to instruction at 8:00 am Monday (Oct. 12), and updates will be shared as they are received.
    2. Send information for Spring hiring expectations to Henry as soon as you have them.
