Council of Department Chairs

In attendance: Curtis Bennett, Barbara Taylor, Krzysztof Slowinski, Jesse Dillon, Lijuan Li, Lora Stevens, Will Murray, Prashanth Jaikumar, Jim Kisiel, Christine Whitcraft, Babette Benken (via Teams), Henry Wu, Margaret Karteron (via Teams), Lindsay Aymar

  1. Approve agenda (10:00) – Approved
  2. Approve minutes from October 3 – Approved as amended
  3. Announcements
    1. ASM
      1. Payroll does not mail checks anymore (for people who do not have direct deposit)
        1. People who do not use direct deposit need to pick up physical checks from the cashier’s office
        2. Payroll is also not printing paystubs
        3. Must use SSO website to see and print your paystubs and W2s
      2. Department spending spreadsheets have been shared with department chairs and coordinators, so you can see an up-to-date balance anytime on share drive
      3. New university hospitality guidelines say self-catering (delivery) is OK for up to 49 participants
        1. Any event with more than 50 participants must use catering, or someone picks up the food (rather than using delivery)
      4. CSU AND UAW (Unit 11-TA/GA/ISA) REACH TENTATIVE AGREEMENT ON TWO-YEAR SUCCESSOR AGREEMENT
        1. The California State University (CSU) and the Statewide University Police Association (SUPA) reached a tentative agreement
        2. The California State University (CSU) and the California State University Employees Union (CSUEU) reached a "tentative agreement"
    2. Operations
      1. College council needs to nominate and RSCA committees
        1. Math and Biology have their nominees – still need Science Ed, Physics, Earth Science and Chemistry
    3. Dean
      1. Eclipse viewing
        1. Saturday 10/14 outside PH 1 from 8AM-11AM (eclipse happens about 9:30AM)
          1. We will provide glasses
          2. Small event, not every public
          3. Some student groups will be coming
          4. Mostly CNSM students
          5. There will be a bigger, more public event in April for the eclipse then
      2. Personal Holidays
        1. Must be approved at the Dean's office level
          1. Must be approved by mutual agreement
          2. Should not be on a teaching day
      3. Vacation approvals, etc.
        1. Every time you approve vacation time, CC Henry so he is aware and has a paper trail
      4. CDC Vacation Calendar
        1. Put your unavailability on the calendar on teams
      5. Safety Briefing Email
        1. Safety office will be in to discuss heat safety concerns/protocol
          1. There will be a mandated training on heat-related illness

          1. Labor Market Outcomes Section shows job outcomes by campus and undergraduate major
          2. Statistical reports on degree completion
          3. Can search and compare STEM degree completion by campus
          4. Website includes instructions for how to read the data and how it is recorded
      2. FERPA Email
        1. Reminder on information sharing with parents of students
          1. Faculty should never discuss any student information with parents
          2. To share information a formal release needs to be signed – releases live on Peoplesoft (all electronic)
          3. If accessibility accommodations require information sharing, BMAC needs to undertake that
        2. If parents want information, faculty should direct parents to department chairs and deans

        1. ATS will phase out VGA cables over the next 8-10 years

  • October 14: Eclipse viewing
  • November 10: Veterans Day (campus closed)
  • November 20-22: Fall break (no classes)
  • November 23-24: Thanksgiving Holiday
  • December 11: Last day of classes (MONDAY)
  • December 12-18: Final Examinations (last finals are on a MONDAY)
  • December 22: Last Day of Fall Semester
  • January 2: Winter Session starts
