Council of Department Chairs

Present: C. Bennett, K. Slowinski, B. Taylor, B. Livingston, C. Brazier, R. Behl, T. Gao, A. Bill, L. Martin-Hansen, M. Karteron, and L. Olsen-Cooper.

Agenda: Approved. (10:00)

  1. Minutes: Meeting minutes for Tuesday, February 6, 2018 and Tuesday, February 13, 2018 were both approved with changes.
  2. SEF Fund Discussions with Students (10:05) (10:45)
    1. Department Chairs described their requests for both the Designated and Competitive proposals. Dr. Slowinski explained the HVDI 2025 Grad Program requests. Ms. Reema Tominna (Secretary, CNSM Student Council) attended the CDC meeting to review the funding proposals on behalf of the CNSM students.
  3. Announcements
    1. Margaret Karteron reported that four (4) laptops and a camera were stolen from one of the G2 offices on Friday afternoon, February 16.
    2. There will be an Evacuation Drill on Wednesday, February 21 at 10:30am. Please be sure to evacuate in a timely manner and go directly to the designated area.
    3. Our 2018 CNSM Commencement ceremony will require the guests to have tickets to enter the venue. Each graduate will receive eight (8) tickets with their cap and gown rental. Additional tickets will be available upon request (see Lane Olsen-Cooper). Also, the jumbotrons will have a running video with some awardee recognition included.
    4. Dr. Rick Behl announced that their next Los Angeles Basin Geology Society meeting will be at the Grand (on Willow, Long Beach). Dr. Jane Bormann will be the speaker. She will be speaking on the "Hazards from the Sea: Assessing Evidence of Fault System Connectivity and Potential Rupture Scenarios for the San Diego Trough and San Pedro Basin Fault Systems".
    5. Everyone is invited to the Geological Sciences Department Office (HSCI-322) to enjoy the award-winning scientific stitchery exhibit by Ms. Audrey Ledford. The beautiful embroidered art pieces represent different tectonic cross-section of the Earth as well as a gorgeously eroded outcrop of the Monterey Formation (the most fascinating geologic formation on Earth!).
    6. The South Coast Geological Society (SCGS) Meeting at CSULB will be on Monday, March 12, 2018 at 6:00pm in The Chartroom. Dr. Richard Behl will be presenting on the topic: "The Santa Barbara Record of Two Volcanic Winters Triggered by Twin Yellowstone Supervolcano Eruptions 631,000 Years Ago."
    7. Dean Bennett will be at the CSU Dean's Academy on Thursday, February 22 and Friday, February 23, 2018 for training.
    8. Dean Bennett stated that there will be an Equity and Diversity Training for the Chairs.
    9. Dr. Tangan Gao reminded all that the Math @The Beach event will be this Saturday, February 24 from 9:00am to 3:00pm at the USU Ballrooms!
  4. Communication Discussion. In preparation, please have thought about: (postponed)
    1. How does your department maintain contact with alumni, donors, and friends?
      1. If you have a newsletter, how do you manage it?
      2. If it's organic by faculty (i.e., no newsletter and faculty pay attention to their own student), (how) does it trick up to the department?
    2. What might help you do your communication better?
    3. How do you keep the college information of the good "stories" that you department has?
    4. What are the top 3 department priorities over the next 3-5 years?
