Council of Department Chairs

  1. CDC Photo (10:00) - successfully completed
  2. Approve agenda (10:05am)
  3. Approve minutes - 4 February, approval deferred to further email discussion
  4. Announcements
    1. Operations updates
      1. Open House - draft of flyer circulated for review. Organizational meetings to be scheduled. Send custom tattoo diagrams to Barbara Taylor, who will organize their printing
      2. Commencement - Monday, May 18 11am rehearsal time. Free parking with VIP parking in special lot. Check-in for students in Gold Mine gym. Commencement Award announcement notice will be sent out. No College-wide single Outstanding BS student. It will be replaced by the Richard D. Green award for each department (one will get to give a 1-minute speech). Graduate Deans List (CNSM gets 4 slots). Nominations due soon - (Feb 26 to College Office). Grand Marshall nominees: 1. Laura Kingsford or 2. Robert Mena. Program will continue including thesis titles. Outstanding theses need to be submitted (with confirmation) at about the same time as thesis submission deadline. Student Caps and Gowns are now CSULB-customized and only for sale (not for rent). The Dean's office will rent gowns for any faculty who attend
      3. Will solicit nominations for 2020-2021 committees and councils, soon.
    2. ASM updates
      1. 3-year review of staff position descriptions. There will be an explanatory meeting for staff.
    3. Dean's Report
      1. Course Development Grants - primarily to develop upper division B (3 units -release or money), worthiness significantly rated by # of students served. Proposals due March 23. For award next year, including this summer.
      2. Academic Senate/GR/Ethnic Studies Requirement – GR discussion tabled until late March.
        1. CSU Academic Senate passed a resolution that all students should have a 3-unit ethnic studies at lower level, with a 3-unit UD reflection course that has to be approved by Ethnic Studies.
      3. Online SPOTS - will not be implemented this term
      4. Entrepreneurship sequence - donor funded year-long sequence class. Half can be from other than Business. If any of our students are interests, there could be support. Curt will pass on new info as available.
      5. China
        1. Coronavirus. No travel to China currently permitted.
        2. Greater state department oversight of visitors from China. If faculty plans to have someone come officially, it will require additional time and paperwork to get visas. For longer stays, paperwork submitted through CPIE.
  5. Associate Deans
    1. Research
      1. RS policy discussion - A draft amendment to the policy will be circulated at CDC 2/25.
        1. Amendments will include: RS account 'audit date' to coincide with notice of award; internal funding awards deposited to RS accounts will be excluded; faculty can send notice of encumbrances; IDC percentage to the PI will be for the term of grant; there will be process for appeal and for return of diverted funds in the event of a gap in funding
        2. Additional amendments can be suggested (email Barbara Taylor) and discussed on 2/25
    2. Academic Programs
      1. Preparation of March 7 event (Time Certain 10:45: Valerie Bagley). To be called: "Science and Math Freshman Showcase." Discussed schedule and structure.
      2. No complete database of Standard Course Outlines exists. There is a need for 100- and 200-level courses archived on a shared drive. We need to update and share. Use University template.
  6. SEF/HVDI fund discussion
    1. We have not yet received the call for proposals.
