Jim Dowdalls

Jim Dowdalls is an educator and Medical and Scientific Illustrator, teaching the subject of Biomedical Illustration at Cal State Long Beach since 2002. Besides his career as a full-time faculty member at Fullerton College and adjunct faculty at Cal State Long Beach, Jim has also been a freelance medical illustrator, working in the Southern California area, for the last 30 years. His work is commissioned by a variety of companies seeking a descriptive visual interpretation of medically related products and subject matter. His clients have included everything from medical magazines targeted to doctors, to pharmaceutical companies introducing new drugs on the market, to textbooks that instruct a new generation of surgeons. It is always interesting and stimulating work that constantly challenges and rewards.

Jim has illustrated several medical textbooks, one of which was a gynecology textbook for gynecological surgical students; the other, a text on vocal pedagogy for aspiring voice teachers. More currently he has collaborated with Dr. Rahul Jandial of The City of Hope on several textbooks on spinal surgery and scientific practice methods. Jim has won several awards from the Society of Illustrators, as well as from the Association of Medical Illustrators and Brown University. He is also the author of Fundamentals of Drawing from Quatro publishing (2014).

His recent paintings have focused on the fragility of our most important Earth resource, the Oceans. As a California native, with a lifelong love of the California coast, he would like his paintings to entertain, but also tell the story of the health and well-being of the ocean and its' inhabitants.
