XR Lab
XR (Extended Reality) is an umbrella term for all immersive technologies that merge physical and digital worlds.
The XR Lab is a learning space where mixed-reality experiences can be explored for education, training, and research. Outfitted with high-end technology including VR headsets, motion-capture devices, and animation software, the lab expands the potential to innovate on team projects and find creative solutions for teaching and learning.
Virtual Reality uses wearable headsets that completely shut out the physical world and immerse users into a fully artificial digital environment. Users can interact with these simulated environments and explore concepts through experience rather than by observation alone. When thoughtfully integrated into a course, VR can provide students with new ways to engage with content, practice skills, and encounter scenarios that may be difficult to recreate in a traditional classroom.
Augmented Reality adds virtual objects (such as 3D models, text, or animations) that can be seen through the camera view of phones, tablets or smart glasses. Users see real environments as usual through their cameras, but also see virtual objects overlaid into the scene. Interactions are controlled by touchscreens, buttons, or controllers. In an educational setting, this technology allows students to explore concepts through interactive experiences to visualize and get hands-on training in a safe environment.
Mixed Reality works similar to augmented reality, except that the added virtual elements can interact with the environment (rather than just float above) such as hiding behind physical walls or rolling off real tables. Users interact with objects naturally via hand gestures, eye tracking, and voice commands through headsets with built-in depth sensors or specialized cameras. It differs from VR in that the digital content is integrated into the actual physical space, allowing real and virtual elements to interact in real time rather than just being in a fully artificial environment.
