Partnership for Research and Education in Materials (PREM)
This PREM partnership between California State University Long Beach (CSULB) and The Ohio State University's Center for Emergent Materials (OSU CEM) builds on a successful three-year Seed grant awarded in 2021. The program integrates materials science, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and biophysics to explore topology and cooperative emergent phenomena in systems ranging from 2D crystals to magnetic thin films and biopolymers, with applications in energy-efficient computing, quantum information processing, and next-generation electronics.
Research projects include studies on topology, magnetism, and superconductivity in telluride alloys; geometric magnetic frustration in sodium osmates; exotic magnetic states on curved films; tunable magnon-spin heterostructures; and topological effects in biomolecules. Students engage in these projects through M.Sc. and Bridge programs, CEM's REU program, and other research-based pathways. An additional goal beyond research is to prepare students for STEM Ph.D.s or industry careers. By combining advanced experimental, synthesis, and theoretical approaches, the collaboration fosters a dynamic research culture and strengthens cross-institutional partnerships.
Mission
The mission of the Partnership for Research and Education in Materials (PREM) program is to identify students interested in pursuing research as a career and provide high-quality research opportunities and extensive mentorship for these students. All activities are in close partnership with the Center for Emergent Materials at The Ohio State University (OSU).
PREM will provide participants with cutting-edge research opportunities in materials science and prepare them to be competitive for entering graduate programs and careers in industry.
Pathway
The partnership between California State University, Long Beach and The Ohio State University is outlined below.
Pathway for material science students supported through the PREM project. LA basin high school and community college students flow into the CSULB undergraduate population. The CSULB undergraduate population flows into the OSU Ph.D. program through the CEM REU or through the Bridge program. Additionally, other undergraduate students flow into the CSULB Bridge or CSULB Masters programs. Finally, students in the CSULB Bridge or CSULB Masters programs flow into the OSU Ph.D. program or into other Ph.D. programs.
