MSIS Students Win First Place at 2026 LMU Datathon
Three MS in Information Systems (MSIS) students—Abygail Caparoso, Timothy Tan, and Ha (Heather) Pham—took home first place at the 2026 LMU Datathon on March 14, 2026!
Competing against 26 graduate teams from 15 universities, the team’s achievement highlights the strength of the MSIS program. Their success reflects exactly what our students are trained to do: tackle complex, real-world problems and solve them using data.
Working with the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 (NLSY97) dataset, the team evaluated whether California’s 2018 salary history ban has had a meaningful impact on wage inequality. They analyzed long-term wage trends and developed statistical models to better understand how the policy affected different groups over time. Their findings indicated that the wage gap has not significantly closed following the policy’s implementation. Based on these results, the team proposed data-driven recommendations aimed at addressing persistent disparities. This achievement highlights the value of applying analytical skills to real-world policy challenges.
