CAST Program
The Campus Assessment & Stabilization Team (CAST) consists of mobile mental health professionals, in collaboration with law enforcement, responding to crisis and urgent needs of the CSULB campus and surrounding community with a humanistic and trauma-informed approach. CAST support students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community experiencing a mental health and/or behavioral health crisis.
University Police and CAST often receive calls related to students experiencing a mental health crisis, so please review the important FAQs below for guidance.
- Current/present suicidal ideation or self-harm concerns
- Behavioral health crises involving students (atypical behavior deviating from their normal conduct in class)
- Welfare checks involving mental health concerns
If suicidal ideation is:
- Current or within the last 24 hours, call UPD (562) 985-4101
More than 24 hours, provide the student with the following information or walk student over to:
Student Health Services Building, Phone (562) 985-4771, Hours: Mon-Fri 8am-5pm
or
CAPS, Location: BH 226, Phone:(562) 985-4001, Hours: Mon-Fri 8am-5pm
In either case, submit a Cares Referral providing information on concern and what steps have been done to address concern.
You can contact CAST by calling the CSULB University Police Department at either 911 or the non-emergency line at (562) 985-4101. Dispatch will ask a series of questions to assess the situation for risk and safety. CAST will be deployed to respond to the call if appropriate.
