Strategies for a Successful RTP File: A Faculty Center Workshop for RTP Candidates

Workshop for Candidates undergoing retention, tenure, and promotion. Will review new university-wide RTP policy, components of the RTP file, suggest best practices in preparation and execution, and answer questions about the RTP process.

Ideas for Equity in Department RTP Policies

For faculty who would like to learn about best equity practices for new CSULB Department RTP policies. This workshop is designed to help those drafting these policies to learn about and discuss three key areas in which new Department RTP policies can promote greater equity for faculty: 1. the documentation and evaluation of Cultural/Identity taxation; 2. the documentation and evaluation of Scholarship of Engagement and 3. best practices for incorporating Student Perception of Teaching (SPOT)evaluations into candidate files and evaluations. Participants will first be introduced to Cultural/Identity Taxation, scholarship of engagement (community-based scholarship) and bias in student evaluations. Then we will share ideas for how to equitably approach these concepts in Department RTP policies. Rather than making specific prescriptions, the workshop is designed to offer general approaches and practices that may be adapted to different departments and disciplines. This workshop is grounded in the co-facilitators' past experiences crowdsourcing CSULB faculty's perceptions of equity choke points on our campus, particularly through the COVID Equity Task Force (2021-2022) and the CLA Strategic Plan (2022-2023).

Co-Facilitator: Raven Pfister, Interim Associate Faculty Center Director

Avoiding Unintentional Bias: A Workshop for RTP Evaluators and Hiring Committees

This workshop will introduce participants to the concept of implicit or unintentional bias, showing how unconscious associations and mental shortcuts can shape perceptions and decisions. It will present evidence of how bias may appear in hiring, evaluations, and recommendation letters, while engaging participants in activities such as the Implicit Association Test and group discussions. The workshop will emphasize future strategies, including personal practices (e.g., slowing down, stereotype replacement, individuation, mindfulness) and procedural approaches (e.g., setting clear evaluation criteria, enforcing policies) to reduce bias. Overall, it will encourage ongoing awareness, reflection, and structural change to support fairer practices. Please note: due to intellectual property restrictions, we are not able to provide a recording of this workshop.

Facilitator: Amy Wax, Associate Professor of Industrial-Organizational Psychology
