We would also like to thank 2016-honored alumna, Barbara Barcon class of ‘84, for graciously agreeing to host this year’s Mixer. The evening started with remarks from the Director of the Graduate Business Programs, Dr. Ingrid Martin, highlighting the importance of alumni in the future of the Gradate Business Programs. The 2017 Honored MBA/MFA Alumna Lucy Craig Guillen was introduced and spoke about her fond memories and attachments to the graduate program and the CBA. Alumni from as far back as 1969, including MBA and MA in Global Logistics alums, attended and mingled with current students from all five graduate business programs. The event was a great opportunity for our alumni to reconnect and find ways to remain engaged with CSULB.

Digital Transformation in Information Systems – Speaker Series
The Department of Information Systems in the College of Business Administration launched the Industry Speaker Series. Under the theme of “Digital Transformation” in Information Systems, the series provides critical and up-to-date knowledge on the three focus areas of the Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) program: Application Development, Business Analytics, and Cyber Security.
The Guest Speaker Series began on September 18 with Alex Bermudez at Panasonic Avionics Corporation with Security Risk Management and IT Assurance: Past Experience and Future Insights. The series continued on September 27 with KPMG Managers, Jonathan Yao, Andrew Poliko, and Colin Babcock, when they presented Building Skills in Business: Security, Business Analytics, and Data Analytics.
October was National Cyber Security Awareness Month and the IS Industry Speaker Series continued on October 18 from 3:30PM-4:45PM when cybersecurity specialist Lorenzo Ocampo from Southern California Edison presents Challenges in Securing SCADA Systems.
SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems are vital for industrial organizations, as they assist in maintaining efficiency, processing data for smarter decisions, and communicating system issues, all of which help in diminishing downtime.
On November 1, the IS Dept. hosted Brett Johnson, a central figure in the cybercrime world for almost 20 years, who spoke about the Dark Web and the latest trends in cybercrime. Brett was the co-founder of ShadowCrew – one of the first and most successful Dark Web markets for fake IDs, stolen personal information, and stolen credit card numbers. He was on the US Secret Service “Most Wanted” list prior to becoming an informant. Brett is now working as a cybercrime and identity theft consultant for clients such as Microsoft, Emailage, and Sift Science.
IS Digital Transformation theme will continue to plan more events on the three focus areas: Application Development, Business Analytics, and Cybersecurity.
Graduate Business Association – Life in the Fast Lane Event

On Saturday, Nov. 4, over 60 students from the College of Business Administration Graduate Programs at CSULB, along with alumni and faculty, filed into a lecture hall as David M. Gross author of his memoir Fast Company: A Memoir of Love, Life, and Motorcycles in Italy took the stage for an evening of conversation. "The idea for the event came up organically after a conversation with Dr. Nguyen following a case study about luxury marketing," said Jessica Lord, GBA president and event organizer.
Dr. Hieu P. Nguyen, an Associate Professor of Marketing at CSULB, moderated the conversation. Dr. Nguyen teaches MBA and undergraduate courses in marketing concepts, management, and strategy.
Over the course of a lively discussion, Mr. Gross spoke on his experience at Ducati and his transition from corporate lawyer to luxury marketer. He spoke to the students about the importance of building a network of colleagues, something he admitted he is still working on. He also spoke freely on the challenges of working internationally and navigating a career change. Eventually, conversation drifted towards the topics of a new media company that Mr. Gross is building. The room buzzed with excitement and curiosity as Mr. Gross discussed his concept for this new company in a tremulous industry.
During the economic boom of the mid-1990’s David M. Gross was working for the Wall Street law firm Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett when he was invited to revive the legendary motorcycle company, Ducati Motor Holdings. At Ducati, Mr. Gross oversaw the company’s global brand and marketing activities, including investor relations, licensing development, and the Ducati Store concept. As a turnaround expert for luxury consumer goods, Mr. Gross has worked with companies such as: Tumi, Oakley, Testoni, Bally, Yves Saint Laurent among others.
Following the conversation, the evening continued into the courtyard for refreshments and hors d'oeuvre. Mr. Gross continued speaking with graduate students throughout the evening, all of them eager to learn, engage, and connect with someone who has experience success in his career. The event was organized and sponsored by the Graduate Business Association (GBA). The GBA would like to thank additional sponsors Dr. Ingrid Martin, Dr. Hieu Nguyen, and Giselle Oberly for their generosity that made the event possible.

Johnny Acierto – Marketing and Operations Specialist

Upon graduation, he obtained an engineering internship at L-3 Communications. Within three months, he accepted an offer for a full-time engineering position. Johnny began working on multiple GPS projects. The responsibilities included creating and executing a test plan for a Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) based receivers.
Johnny moved to the Mission Support Engineering group where he worked as a mission support lead for Trident D-II missile firing exercises. Here he coordinated with and created test plans to ensure the operational readiness for systems that receive and process telemetry data, communications, and video from missile launch to impact.
While this sounds like all work and no play, Johnny has other interests that keep him from being a dull boy. He has been running like a mad man for years, participating in various 10k and half marathons. In addition, he ran his first and only marathon in New York City. Johnny also loves to hike and will take many attempts to get the perfect “jumping picture” when he reaches the destination. His most memorable hike was the Half Dome in Yosemite. When he is not running and hiking, he will dabble in yoga where he finds his breath and inner peace. Johnny loves to travel to very distant lands. He also enjoys the pleasures of food and unfortunately gains a couple of pounds during his travel adventures. When it is time to relax, he will amuse himself with all forms of media including but not limited to television, movies, video games and sports (3-28, GO PATS!). The fun will never end with Johnny, it’s always adventure time.
