2020 Holiday Mixer

Published January 4, 2021

The 2020 Holiday Mixer took place on December 18 on Zoom. The CoVID-19 pandemic gave us an unexpected opportunity to reunite with alumni who are afar (e.g., Washington, Colorado, and Arizona). Eleven PSMS/METRIC alumni, nine current METRIC students, and five program personnel joined for a night of holiday celebration and remanence.

The event started with an icebreaker activity on Jamboard where everyone described what they were willing to leave behind in 2020 and most looking forward to in 2021. Then each person took turns to talk about what they had been up to. It was so nice to hear that some have completed their Ph.D. programs and started a business, others are finishing up their Ph.D. programs within the coming year, and those who didn't do a Ph.D. are thriving in their respective industry. The alumni gave the current scholars a bright future to look forward to.

To get everyone into the holiday spirit, the group played a holiday musical bingo and concluded with each discipline group meeting in a breakout room and taking a photo/screenshot of a holiday shape that was made with everyone in the room.

The purposes of this much-needed mixer were to:

  1. reconnect students and faculty during challenging times
  2. allow METRIC students to further connect with each other and remind them of the importance of community
  3. connect METRIC students with program alumni
  4. get into the holiday spirit
