UMC Renovation

The University Music Center (UMC) is home to the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, a prestigious music program with the mission “To educate and inspire exceptional students for successful careers as artists, teachers, and scholars through practical global experiences in a vibrant performance-oriented setting.”

New Building

The Project will include a new building (approximately 10,000 to 12,000 gross square feet in size) designed to house music lesson rooms, practice rooms, and student common areas.  The new building program will replace the existing 61 practice rooms that are currently used for instrument and vocal practice and which will be demolished.  The new building could be located on open space to the west side of the existing UMC complex, but further studying is required.

Outdoor Student Hub

The Project will include an outdoor student hub for students to study, practice, and collaborate throughout the day and night.  The outdoor space will include a new vertical façade that is intended to hide the back of house elements that will be exposed once the 61 practice rooms are demolished.  The outdoor design will include student seating, study space, practice space, and  vending area, as students are known to practice and collaborate all hours of the day and night.

Daniel Recital Hall

The Daniel Recital Hall is an important venue where students showcase their talents to their professors, their family, and the CSULB community.  It is in need of major improvements, such as aesthetics, acoustics, and accessibility upgrades. The design will include a remodel of the ticket booth, main entrances and exits, main audience area and other support spaces, with special attention to accessibility.  New seating, flooring, painting, and acoustical treatments are intended to give this space a modern look.

Overall Landscape, outdoor WiFi, along with ADA upgrades will be completed as part of this project.
