Beware of Coronavirus-Themed Cybersecurity Attacks
As the COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) situation continues to develop, please be aware that malicious cyberattacks are increasing. In particular, attempts to take advantage of the COVID-19 outbreak are occurring, including more social engineering attacks, scams, and fraudulent activities delivered via social media, email, texts, phone calls, and other means.
As a reminder, you can always forward questionable email to alert@csulb.edu for help ensuring it is legitimate. In addition, we encourage everyone to remain vigilant and take the following precautions:
- Exercise caution in handling any email with a COVID-19-related subject line, attachment, or hyperlink.
- Be skeptical of emails from unfamiliar sources that trigger an emotional reaction.
- Do not reveal sensitive information in email, instant messages, or texts.
- Always consider why someone wants your information and question whether the request is appropriate.
- Avoid clicking on links, opening attachments or download software found in unsolicited emails, instant messages, or texts.
- Fraud and scams prey on fear. Do not let sensational news cause you to panic into making quick decisions.
- Be wary of social media pleas. Verify a charity’s authenticity before making donations.
- Use trusted and legitimate sources for up-to-date, fact-based information about coronavirus.
- Pause before you click. Always verify the source of the information before you act.
