National Cyber Security Awareness: Protect Yourself from Ransomware

Dear Colleagues,

Ransomware has increased worldwide, affecting many organizations and individuals. Ransomware is a malicious software that blocks access to a computer’s system or files so an attacker can demand money in exchange for unlocking the computer or system. Please protect yourself from ransomware and other malware by following these tips:

Back up data by storing your work data on campus-provided file shares, which are automatically secured and backed up on a regular basis. The Division of IT has also deployed OneDrive, a secure and backed up cloud storage service, for faculty and staff members and is available within the campus Single Sign-On service (SSO).

Keep software updated, including your operating system. Outdated systems and software are most vulnerable to attacks. Division of IT will regularly push out vendor-provided security patches and updates that will automatically install on your computers.

Be wary of email attachments. If you are asked to “enable macros” to view attachments from an unknown source, delete the email. These emails may come from known or unknown sources.

Don’t pay the ransom. Ransomware attackers are criminals, so there is no guarantee they will unlock your device or give back your information after they are paid. They may ask you to pay additional sums and never release your data.

If you fall victim to ransomware, immediately disconnect your computer from the campus network or home network and contact your campus technical coordinator. Also, alert University Police and DO NOT pay the ransom or attempt to contact the ransomware perpetrator.
